The Arktiskflåten (Arctic Fleet) is a named fleet of the Sjøforsvaret. The mission of the Arktiskflåten is to conduct the full range of Maritime Operations and Theater Security Cooperation missions, in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties, in order to advance security and stability in the Arctic Area.
During the Cold War, the Arktiskflåten was focused on trying to counter the threat from Soviet submarines. After the fall of the USSR, the fleet was restructured and its main mission today is to protect Skandinavia's interests in the Arctic, as well as the defense of Iceland, Jan Mayen and Svalvard.
As the Arctic is becoming an area of special economic interest, the mission of the fleet is to ensure the protection of national interests in the area.
