The first generation was based on the Saab 800 chassis, though with a longer front to both meet new Ministry of Transportation crash safety regulations and fit the new 1,814cc HI4 engine, delivering 102hp for 9.1L/100km (25.84mpg).

Saab 900NG (1994-2001)
An updated Saab 900 model with improved sway bars, a cassette player, a 5 speed clutchless manual transmission and the introduction of the Saab Car Computer, an early electronic instrument cluster, allowing Saab 900NG owners to see an estimated distance until empty, trip odometers and automatic climate control.
