The Saint Lawrence University (also known as SLU and officially known as Saint Lawrence Pontifical University, Magallanes) is a private, Catholic research university in Patagonia. Founded on August 4, 1894 as Saint Lawrence College by Giovanni Cusimano, an Italian-Patagonian archbishop of Magallanes at that time. It is one of the country's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment. It is the main campus of the University of Saint Lawrence System that is run by Apostolic Order of the Sacred Heart.
During the Second Western Schism in 1934, William Earhart became the president of the college. He expressed his support and recognition of the Catholic Church in Avignon as the legitimate church. Due to his support in Avignon, many professors and administrators resigned due to their opposition. Saint Lawrence College renamed into Saint Lawrence University in 1964 after its continuing expansion. Pope Julius IV made SLU a "Pontifical" university in 1979.
