The Samaritan class Hospital ship is the second class of hospital ship put into use by the Union of Everett navy. The Samaritan class takes on an all new advanced design, coming off closer as a luxury cruise-line vessel than the previous Mercy-class ship's oil tanker design. Two ships of this class have been built, the EVNS Samaritan and EVNS Compassion. A third additional ship is being constructed, planned to be docked at NAS Larak in the Persian Gulf, which would become the EVNS Charity, and a fourth for NATO, NTO Hero. The United Nations showed interest in acquiring a vessel for disaster relief and humanitarian operations, proposed as the UNS Hope. Samaritan-class vessels are powered by a fusion reactor turbine and can speed up to over 60 miles per hour. Two other vessels are proposed to join the Everetti Navy, the Empathy and Harmony.
Specifications
The Samaritan class features an expansive rooftop landing pad for helicopters, capable of landing up to half a dozen UH-60 Blackhawk sized air ambulances compared to the Mercy class' one landing pad. The Samaritan is the same length as a Ford-class Aircraft Carrier, at over 1,000 feet in length. The Samaritan class contains 2,250 beds for patients and a full hospital functionality including six operating rooms, two dozen trauma rooms, a dentistry office, a veterinary clinic, a pediatric ward, an OB-GYN ward, an intensive care and ICU recovery room, an optical and vision office and varying utility rooms including radiology, medical labs, pharmacies, cat scan, MRI and oxygen producing plants.
Because the Samaritan is a hospital ship, firing on it is an international war crime. As well, it is unarmed and is generally accompanied by at least one military vessel to protect it from potential hazards depending on operating dangers. For example, when passing through Somalian waters in 2009, the EVNS Compassion was guarded by two Arleigh Burke class Destroyers.
The EVNS Samaritan and EVNS Compassion have six UH-60 Blackhawk medium utility helicopters each, modified to function as military air ambulances. These air ambulances are designated the UH-60R Rescuehawk and feature bright white and neon reflective yellow paint jobs, and the symbol of the Red Cross in bright red. The vessels are painted similarly, featuring bright white and bright red color scheme.
