After a year in office, Andrews announced he did not wish to serve beyond 1999, and requested the government select a replacement. President Andrews did not reveal why he had chosen to retire until late 1999, when he announced he had stepped down because he was suffering from severe depression.
After leaving office, Andrews became a spokesman for depression and has written two books on the subject. Andrews died on 14 July 2022, one week after his 85th birthday, of heart failure.
