The Treaty of Magellan City, also known as the Treaty of 2202 or the Ceasefire of 2202, was an agreement of peace and cessation of hostilities between the victorious United Nations and the Liberation Coalition, comprised of the Martian Federation and the Free Alliance, in the wake of the Interplanetary War.
The treaty took force three months later, on June 1, 2202, and was set to expire sixty-eight years later, in 2270. However, the circumstances forced the abolishment of the treaty's terms in 2259.
The immediate period after the treaty was ratified is sometimes referred to as the Magellan era by some historians.
Terms
The Treaty of Magellan City declared the cessation of hostilities between the United Nations and their opponents, the Martian Federation and the Free Alliance. The peace treaty imposed heavy economical embargoes on the MF, to which the payment of 95.23% of the UN's war reparations was added. Because the UN did not achieve absolute victory, it was also forced to pay 4.77% of the MF's war reparations.
A 0.32 AU buffer zone was delimited between Mars and Earth, as means to prevent tensions from ever breaking out into an interplanetary conflict. Mars' outer colonies were occupied by the United Nations for three years. Also, Ceres' governance, previously a fully Martian territory, was replaced with a dualist administration of both the MF and the UN.
The treaty also underlined the dissolution of the Free Alliance and imprisonment of its governmental officials, including President Bishop. All previously Free Alliance territories were transferred back to their original administer, the United Nations.
The Martian Federation was forbidden access to the data the alpha-beta investigation teams were able to collect, and thus to hyperspace knowledge and later technology for three Terran years. This obstacle ensured the United Nations' position as the superior superpower up until the Great Unification of 2259.
