The Lord of the Borderlands, alternatively known as the Lord of the Border and the Lord Protector, is a lordship within the Kingdom of Breifne. The lord acts as the head of the Borderlands, a lordship in the far north of the kingdom. The current Lord of the Borderlands is Oran Vahran, of House Vahran. House Vahran have ruled the borderlands since the formation of the office in 5475 Ʋ and ruled The Wetlands before the dissolution of the Hadar Union.
The Lord of the Boderlands acts as the Kings representative in the borderlands and also acts as the main barrier between Breifne and Vitrea, an enemy state of the kingdom. The borderlands is home to the Border Watch, a grand organisation and is also home to the largest regional army in Breifne, the Borderlands Royal Defence Force. The Lord of the Borderlands acts as the Commander of the Borderlands Royal Defence Force. The Lord is also in charge of administration of the region, which includes tax collection, law enforcement, education, health and transportation.
The history of the Lordship has its origins in the dissolution of the Hadar Union. Before this, House Vahran had been a great house and ruled The Wetlands, a marshy chunk of land stretching across the entirety of Hadar. After the split of the Hadar Union, the Battle for Varhold ensued. House Vahran sided with the southerners, while their former vasssal, Clan Stormheart sided with the northerners in an attempt to take the Wetlands for themselves. The Battle for Varhold lasted 3 months, during this time the title of Lord of the Borderlands was established by Vyker Stormheart after he successfully retained a private estate held by the Vahran's. A few weeks later, Stormheart lost support from the north and was left to fend for himself. A final assault on the Wetlands led to Varhold being taken by House Vahran and the execution of all members of Clan Stormheart. After that, the Vahran's declared themselves Lord of the Borderlands and swore fealty to the Kingdom of Breifne.
The current Lord is Oran Vahran, who ascended to the title on the death of his father, Totos Vahran. House Vahran has strong ties with the royal house of Breifne, House Silze. Oran Vahran's sister, Edwina Vahran, is married to Amadeus Silze, the Crown Prince of Breifne.
