The 2022 FIFA World Cup was an international football tournament contested by men's national teams that took place between 14 June and 15 July 2022 in Korea. It was the 22nd FIFA World Cup, a worldwide football tournament held once every four years. This is the second World Cup to take place in Asia, after the 2006 tournament in Japan.

The tournament phase involved 32 teams, of which 31 came through qualifying competitions, with the host nation, Korea, qualifying automatically. Of the 32 teams, 20 had taken part in the 2018 tournament, while Hawaii, Finland, and Malaysia made their World Cup debuts. 64 matches were played in 6 venues across 5 cities, with the opening game in Seoul and the final game in Pyongyang. Spain, the defending champions, were eliminated in group stages. Host nation Korea was undefeated in the group stages and was later eliminated in the Round of 16. In the final, the Netherlands played Japan on 15 July at Moranbong Stadium in Pyongyang. Netherlands won the match 3-2, claiming their second title. This game saw Japan reach the farthest in the World Cup as it ever had, with its previous best being in the Round of 16 in 2014.
