Vastmark (Danish: Vestmark), formally the Kingdom of Vastmark, is a Nordic country in the Baltic Sea, located on Vastmark Island and its surrounding smaller Islands. It lies south and east of Sweden, west of Latvia, and northwest of Lithuania. The capital of Vastmark is Havenholm, and the largest metropolitan area is Sydholm.
Little history about Vastmark before discovery by the Swedish is known, but archeological evidence suggests that various fishing communities were established in Vastmark, before migrating elsewhere. Discovered in the 12th century by Swedish fishermen, the island became a fishing hub for the new settlers, eventually being annexed by Sweden in 1187. After the Battle of Vastmark in 1377 during the Dano-Swedish War, the island was formally ceded to Denmark, who repopulated the island with Danish settlers. After the ending of the War of the Seventh Coalition in 1815, the island gained increasing levels of autonomy, along with a sudden burst in population.
After the invasion of Denmark during World War II, British forces captured and occupied the Island, dissolving local government. Vastmark eventually gained independence in the Paris Peace Treaties in 1947, establishing a short lived Interim Government, and eventually a Kingdom under an offshoot of the House of Glücksburg that had local rule in the region.
Vastmark is a parliamentary monarchy that ranks high in international measures of quality of life, income and wealth, human rights, and education; it has low levels of perceived corruption. Vastmark maintains the Nordic welfare model with universal health care and a comprehensive social security system, and its values are rooted in egalitarian ideals.
