Vereva/Calendar
General
The calendar of Vereva is based from the movements of the celestial bodies. Larger frames of time, such as eras, are reflected by the planet's movement cycle around the sun, called the Diurnal Eye. Medium units of time, the year and month, are marked in respect with Vereva's moon, the Nocturnal Eye, and its cycle around the planet. The smallest units of time, days, hours and minutes, are scheduled on a basis of the sleeping patterns of sentient races.
Dates
Dates are written in the order from greatest handle of time to least. Era is optional in writing. The era 3, year 196, month 6, day 192 would be written:
- 3EAB:196:6:192
When a smaller number is a subset of the time period before it (such as 5th day of the month as opposed to 5th day of the year), a forward slash is used before it instead of the colon. Era 2, 18th year of the era, month 6, 5th day of that month would be written:
- 3EAB/18:6/5
Between the month and year, either the colon or the forward slash can be used as months are only counted as subsets from years, and never eras:
- 3EAB:196/6:192
- 3EAB/18:6/5
Seasons
The entire planet undergoes the same season of the year simultaneously. The seasons, alike the months are based upon the moon's movement across the sky as it rotates around the planet.
Spring
When the moon is in the north sky, heading westward toward Vy Mirvë, the planet is in spring.
Summer
When the moon is in the west sky, furthest from the sun, the planet is in summer.
Fall
When the moon is in the south sky, heading eastward toward the sun, the planet is in the fall or autumn season.
Winter
When the moon is in the east sky, blocking the light of the sun, the planet is in winter.
Era
Vereva completes a rotation around the sun once every 40,050 days (every 89 Verevian years). A complete cycle around the sun marks a single Verevian era. The era is only of importance in Aelven culture.
- An era on Vereva is made up of:
- 89 years
- 1,068 months
- 40,050 days
- 1,081,350 hours
- 64,881,000 minutes
- 3,892,860,000 seconds
The current era on Vereva is the 226th Era after Bevesta (226EAB).
Year
The year in Vereva is measured by a full cycle of the moon around the planet (as opposed to the measurement of an Earth year.). One's age in Vereva is done in years (Aelves may alternatively give their age in eras.)
- A year on Vereva is made up of:
- 12 months
- 450 days
- 12,150 hours
- 729,000 minutes
- 43,740,000 seconds
The current year on Vereva is the year 20,176.
Months
Vereva's moon is always visible in the sky. Because of this, it is used to mark the months. There are twelve months on the Vereva, that alternate between 37 and 38 days. These 12 months are named after the position of the moon in the sky in reference with the sun.
All months' names begin with the words "month of the" followed by the name of the month. When a day is added, such as "June 16th," the word day and the number take the place of the word month; eg. "Day 16 of the North Moon."
The current month on Vereva is the Month of the North Moon.
- The months are as follows:
Month of the Sinistral Moon
The Month of the Sinistral Moon is the first month on the Verevian calendar. It is an early spring month containing 37 days, corresponding with March. It gets its name from the position of the moon, directly left, or sinistral, of the sun, moving in the sky for five weeks toward the north.
Day 1 of the Sinistral Moon marks the first day of the spring season as well as the Loreleian holiday of Liberation Day[1].
Month of the North Moon
The Month of the North Moon is the second month of the Verevian calendar. It is a mid-spring month containing 38 days, corresponding with April. It gets its name from the position of the moon in the north sky moving in the sky for five weeks counterclockwise. The Month of the North Moon begins the fertile season of much of Vereva.
Month of the Outgoing Moon
The Month of the Outgoing Moon is the third month of the Verevian calendar. It is a late spring month containing 37 days, corresponding with May. It gets its name from the position of the moon, moving counterclockwise outward from the north for five weeks away from the Sun.
The Kahremite holiday of War Week[2] falls on the 16th week of each year, usually at the end of the Month of the Outgoing Moon or the beginning of the Month of the Right Moon.
Month of the Right Moon
The Month of the Right Moon is the fourth month of the Verevian calendar. It is an early summer month containing 38 days, corresponding with June. It gets its name from the position of the moon, directly right from Pömt Mirvë, moving in the sky counterclockwise over Vy Mirvë for five weeks.
Month of the Far Moon
The Month of the Far Moon is the fifth month of the Verevian calendar. It is a mid-summer month containing 37 days, corresponding with July. It gets its name from the position of the moon, directly over Pömt Mirvë and furthest from the sun. The Month of the Far Moon is the warmest month, where the sun's rays stretch furthest.
Month of the Left Moon
The Month of the Left Moon is the sixth month of the Verevian calendar. It is a late summer month containing 38 days, corresponding with August. It gets its name from the position of the moon, directly left from Pömt Mirvë, moving in the sky counterclockwise over Vy Mirvë for five weeks.
Month of the Incoming Moon
The Month of the Incoming Moon is the seventh month of the Verevian calendar. It is an early fall month containing 37 days, corresponding with September. It gets its name from the position of the moon, moving counterclockwise into the south, heading closer to the sun.
Month of the South Moon
The Month of the South Moon is the eighth month of the Verevian calendar. It is a mid-fall month containing 38 days, corresponding with October. It gets its name from the position of the moon in the south sky moving in the sky for five weeks counterclockwise. The Month of the South Moon ends the fertile season of much of Vereva.
Month of the Dextral Moon
The Month of the Dextral Moon is the ninth month of the Verevian calendar. It is a late fall month containing 37 days, corresponding with November. It gets its name from the position of the moon, directly right, or dextral, of the sun, moving in the sky for five weeks away from the south.
Month of the Waning Sun
The Month of the Waning Sun is the tenth month of the Verevian calendar. It is an early winter month containing 38 days, corresponding with December. It gets its name from the position of the moon, beginning to cover the sun, slowly darkening the skies of Vereva by blocking sunlight. The sunlight hitting the backside of the Nocturnal Eye begins to melt the moon's icy surface, letting waters and large chucks of ice drop onto Vereva. The ice falls into the Beating Heart creating the mist[3].
Month of the Darkness
The Month of the Darkness is the eleventh month of the Verevian calendar. It is a mid-winter month containing 37 days, corresponding with January. It gets its name from the position of the moon between Vereva and the Diurnal Eye, blocking the sun's light entirely for five whole weeks. Without the aid of the sunlight, the Month of the Darkness is easily the coldest month of the year. Aided by the mist[3], it is also the month of the year that receives the most precipitation. Many fauna and even some flora hibernate for the full duration of this month. The Giant race was also said to hibernate during this month.
Month of the Waxing Sun
The Month of the Waxing Sun is the twelfth and final month of the Verevian calendar. It is a late winter month containing 38 days, corresponding with February. It gets its name from the position of the moon, beginning to uncover the sun, slowly rekindling the skies of Vereva by revealing sunlight. The last of the year's mists[3] are created during this month as the final ices fall over the Beating Heart.
Day
The Verevian day is based off of the sleeping patterns of the sentient races. Because for most of the year, the majority of the planet is engulfed with light, people needed a way to track time. They averaged the amount of time people's spent sleeping and the amount of time they spent working , coming up with 7 sleeping hours and 20 waking hours. Adding the days together resulted in 27 hour days.
- A day on Vereva is made up of:
- 1,620 minutes
- 97,200 seconds
