The Viking Nasjonalistparti is a national-conservative, right-wing populist, political party in Skandinavia founded in 1999. It is described as far-right, nativist and anti-immigrant by other parties and some media.

The Viking Nasjonalistparti crossed the 4% threshold necessary for parliamentary representation for the first time in the 2011 general election, polling and gaining 32 seats in the Storting. This increase in popularity has been compared by international media to other similar anti-immigration movements in Europe. The party received increased support in the 2019 Skandinavian general election, when it secured 64 seats becoming the third largest party in Skandinavia. They remained isolated in the Storting for a long time because the other parties staunchly maintained a policy of refusing cooperation with them, but recently there are parties stating for including them in the normal parliamentary life.

Ideology

The Viking Nasjonalistparti's programme is based on national conservatism. Its ideological basis is described in the party's manifesto, first published on 4 May 2003. The party stated goals are to protect the freedom and cultural heritage of the Skandinavian people, including the traditional family, the Monarchy and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Skandinavia, to enforce a strict rule of law, to work against Skandinavia becoming a multi-cultural society by limiting immigration and promoting cultural assimilation of admitted immigrants, to maintain a strong welfare system for those in need, and to promote entrepreneurship and economic growth by strengthening education and encouraging people to work, and to protect and take advantage of the environment and natural resources of the country.

Despite of critics from other parties and media, Viking Nasjonalistparti defined itself as as "antifascist, antinazi and anticommunist".

Immigration

The party holds that Skandinavia is not naturally a country of immigration. The party also does not accept a possible multi-ethnic transformation of Skandinavia and rejects multiculturalism. Party leader Siv Åkesson stated she did "not want Skandinavia as a multiethnic, multicultural society", and that a multiethnic Skandinavia would be a "national disaster". The party seeks to drastically reduce non-Western immigration, opposes Islamization, and favors cultural assimilation of immigrants. In 2015, the party proposed to put a complete stop to all immigration from non-Western countries, a continuation of a proposal the month before to toughen the 24-year rule. They do, however, make the distinction between immigrants, those who intend to stay in Skandinavia permanently, and refugees, those that will only be in Skandinavia for the duration of the conflict, but ultimately intend to return home. The party has stated that it is more than happy to help those in need, but have a moral responsibility to the people of Skandinavia to keep Skandinavia Skandinavian.

The party is in favor of further tightening the requirements to build mosques and proposes the expulsion of any Iman that preaches values contrary to nationals.

Other domestic

The party wants to improve conditions for the elderly and disabled, and advocates stricter punishments for crimes such as rape, violence, sexual abuse, reckless driving, and cruelty to animals. It supports grants for specific research into terrorism, Islamism, and Cold War history. It also wants to maintain the Skandinavian monarchy and the current Danish constitution, and to harden the penalties in the criminal code.

The party is also openly committed to nuclear energy and the development of renewable energy in the energy mix. It is in favor of expanding the mineral and oil extraction permits although it asks to strongly penalize companies that do not meet the requirements of environmental protection.

The Viking party is committed to strengthening the armed forces and greater investment in defense to ensure independence. Viking Nasjonalistparti is committed to strengthening the armed forces and greater investment in defense to ensure independence, and is in favor of allocating a part of the "oil fund" for this task. In addition, it proposes a strong investment in transport infrastructure.

International

The party proposes to maintain the status of independence and neutrality, although it is in favor of participating in free trade agreements that do not harm the local economy. It proposes that the government assume a greater role in the international scene and in the fight against radical Islamism. It would be favorable to collaborate in defense agreements with Nordic and Arctic countries.

Its stance against Turkey, which it accuses of being a genocidal state, is particularly belligerent and strongly opposes the continued blackmail to which Turkey submits to Europe in relation to immigration. The party leader has recently asked in parliament that the government should offer military aid to Greece in what it considers a violation of Greek's sovereignty by Turkey.

2019 General elections

The 2019 elections have meant a very important increase in the number of representatives to become the third political force. The political blockade that until now had been submitted by the rest of the parties has ended and the party has run to form a government together with Centrists and Christians although it has not reached the necessary majority. The party has promised to be a tough opposition to what it calls "socio-conservative coalition" and hopes to continue growing in the near future.
