Web Explorer is a series of graphical web browsers developed by Astorian corporation Comware. Untile the split between Comware and Portal Corporation, Web Explorer came pre-installed with Direct OS. It was later included in Comware Essentials package.

Origins

Architecture

Versions 1-5

The rendering engine for versions 1-5 used the CWHTML layout, which was similar to other browsers at the time. Tabbed browsing would be introduced in beta in version 4. The feature was ahead of it's time, with Infiniti and Mozilla perfecting the feature in their respective browsers. CWHTML was unstable and would further the case for Astoria v Comware Corporation.

Versions 6-9

After the split of Comware and Portal Corporation, Comware developers sought to improve CWHTML by making it open source. However, other developers we're uninterested in the code because of how unstable it was. Instead, the code was rewritten to fix many bugs that existed under the hood. Although version 6 was more stable, new bugs we're found in newer versions that further drove people away from Web Explorer.

Versions 10 and later

Upon the popularity of Infiniti Matrix and Firefox, Comware sought to combine elements of the two browsers in a newer engine called Tacoma, which was named after Mount Tacoma. The new found success with version 10 made Web Explorer the most popular web browser in 28 countries, including Astoria itself.
