West Mainland is one of the states of the United Islands of Georgeland. With a land area of 253,604 sq. km, it is approximately the size of the U.S. state of Montana.
History
West Mainland was created in 2000, when the state of Mainland was divided into two. The Chief Minister of Mainland, Tom Southwell, was elected as Chief Minister at the first election, and former TV presenter Amanda Perry was elected as the state's first Governor.
Government
The Governor of West Mainland is an elected, but mostly ceremonial, position. Everyday power rests with the elected government, headed by the Chief Minister. Elections for the 109-seat unicameral legislature are held every 4 years in July. The last election was in July 2004, at which the Conservative government of Luke Backen was elected by a narrow margin. The legislature uses a first-past-the-post electoral system after a proportional system was rejected in October 2006.
