Early life, education, and career

Antonio Rafael Suarez was born on March 23rd, 1963 to Hector and Maria Suarez in San Diego, Laguna. Hector Suarez was a left-wing political activist from Guadalajara, Mexico while Maria Suarez was an active member of the Labor Party. The couple would flee to Sierra in 1960 following a harsh government crackdown on left wing political dissidents and would be granted political asylum in Sierra, settling down in San Diego, Laguna. Suarez would be born to Hector and Maria as their first child and only son, being the older brother to three younger sisters. The Suarez family would live in Linda Vista, a predominantly Hispanic community located in northern San Diego. Suarez would grow up learning both Spanish and English, speaking mainly Spanish at home due to his parent's inexperience with the English language. According to Suarez, after moving out he would rarely use Spanish in day to day life.

Suarez would begin his educational career in 1967, attending Linda Vista Elementary School from pre-school up to the fifth grade. After promoting from elementary school, Suarez would attend Outer Diego Middle School and later would attend Linda Vista Public High School.
