Antonio Rafael Suarez (born March 23rd, 1963) is a Sierran politician who served as a Senator of the Inland Empire from 2002 to 2020, when he was narrowly defeated by Harriet Barry during the 2020 Sierran Senate elections. He previously served as Majority Leader of the Inland Empire Provincial Legislature from 1998 to 2002. He served in the legislature from 1989 to 2002.
Born and raised in San Diego, Laguna, Suarez was born as a first generation Sierran to Mexican immigrants. Suarez would attend the University of Redlands, graduating with a degree in government administration in 1987. In 1989, Suarez would be elected to the Inland Empire Provincial Legislature as a member of the Royalist Party, becoming the youngest member of the legislature at age 26. As a legislator, Suarez made provincial headlines for his support for his undying support conservative legislation, which was rare among politicians his age. Suarez would be elected Majority Leader of the Inland Empire Provincial Legislature in 1998, serving until his exit from the legislature. In 2002, Suarez would be elected to the Sierran Senate, succeeding George Barton.
As a Senator, Suarez supported socially conservative and economically liberal legislation. He was known for his support of free trade and limited government. He was also known for his multi-partisanship, generally collaborating with right-leaning Democratic-Republicans from Styxie. In 2012, Suarez would become the Chairman of the Royalist Study Committee in the Sierran Senate, succeeding retiring Orange senator Cory Thornton. In 2017, Suarez would endorse Nemesis Heartwell during the 2017 Royalist Party leadership election and after her election, he would become Heartwell's biggest ally in the Senate. Suarez would narrowly lose re-election in 2020 to Harriet Barry of the Christian Democrats. Despite being defeat, Suarez has continued to remain in the political scene, vocally supporting and campaigning for Royalists in the Inland Empire. He has alluded to running for office again.
Early life, education, and career
Antonio Rafael Suarez was born on March 23rd, 1963 to Hector and Maria Suarez in San Diego, Laguna. Hector Suarez was a left-wing political activist from Guadalajara, Mexico while Maria Suarez was an active member of the Labor Party. The couple would flee to Sierra in 1960 following a harsh government crackdown on left wing political dissidents and would be granted political asylum in Sierra, settling down in San Diego, Laguna. Suarez would be born to Hector and Maria as their first child and only son, being the older brother to three younger sisters. The Suarez family would live in Linda Vista, a predominantly Hispanic community located in northern San Diego. Suarez would grow up learning both Spanish and English, speaking mainly Spanish at home due to his parent's inexperience with the English language. According to Suarez, after moving out he would rarely use Spanish in day to day life.
Suarez would begin his educational career in 1967, attending Linda Vista Elementary School from pre-school up to the fifth grade. After promoting from elementary school, Suarez would attend Outer Diego Middle School and later would attend Linda Vista Public High School. While at high school, Suarez would become more politically involved, supporting the Royalist Party, to the dismay of his left-leaning parents...
