The Astorian presidential election of 1874 was held on September 5 to chose the President of Astoria. It was the second quadrennial presidential election where the general public elected the electoral college that selected the chief executive. Nathaniel Cannon of the Frontier Party was victorious over George Apperson of the Whig Party. Roughly 29% of the total population was eligible to vote, with approximately 89.31% of all those eligible voting in the election. It holds the record for largest turnout percentage among eligible voters in Astorian history. Samuel Osborne was elected as the first vice president.
The presidential election was held concurrently with the 1874 general election, which saw the Frontier Party retaining control of both chambers of the National Assembly; the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Nathaniel Cannon decisively defeat Apperson and the slate of Whig candidates up and down the ballot, securing 61.09% of the total vote. Cannon dominated in Clackamas, Pocatello, and Yakima, winning significant majorities, while Apperson's maintained Whiggish dominance in Victoria, where he captured 77.02% of the vote. Cannon maintained his appeal among American settlers across southern Astoria, although his support had decreased by 3.75%. The Whigs' saw their most significant gains in the Mormon corridor of Pocatello and Eastern Clackamas.
Results
In Clackamas, Cannon achieved a significant lead with 71.92% of the vote (19,247 votes) compared to Apperson's 28.08% (7,515 votes), out of a total of 26,762 voters. In Pocatello, Cannon maintained his dominance with 63.42% of the vote (5,929 votes), against Apperson’s 36.58% (3,419 votes) from an electorate of 9,348.
In Victoria, where Apperson had established an electoral alliance with Canadians, Apperson won 77.02% of the vote (7,567 votes), leaving Cannon with just 22.98% (2,258 votes) out of the 9,825 voters. In Yakima, Cannon once secured a victory in the rapidly expanding state with 67.42% of the vote (6,677 votes), while Apperson received 32.58% (3,227 votes) from the total 9,904 voters.
