The 2018 FIFA World Cup was an international football tournament contested by men's national teams that took place between 14 June and 15 July 2018 in Australia. It was the 21st FIFA World Cup, a worldwide football tournament held once every four years. It was the first championship held in Oceania, and the second held outside Europe or the Americas. The tournament was considered one of the most successful in the history of the World Cup, bringing in over 10 million fans from around the world.

31 teams advanced through three years of qualification competitions to join the host nation in the final tournament. China, Malta and Suriname-Guyana would make their World Cup debuts in this tournament. 64 matches were played in 5 stadiums in 5 host cities across Australia. England, the defending champions, were eliminated in the group stage. Host nation Australia would make into the Round of Sixteen. In the finals, Netherlands beat Japan 2-1 in overtime to win their third world title.
