General elections to the Constitutional Assembly of Central America will take place on April 20, 2022, coinciding with the second round vote on the concurrent presidential election.
All 234 seats in the House of Delegates will be up for election with 118 seats needed for a majority. Since 2002, all major parties have formed political coalitions with other liekminded political parties with the governing Nationalist Party leading the New Society and New Hope coalition while the Democratic Alliance is part fo the opposition Alliance for the People. Primaries were held on January 20 for the parties' main nominees for the position of President of the House of Delegates.
Key issues for the election includes issues of political corruption, environmental security and protection, trade, and access to the Caribbean Sea in the wake of the Caribbean diplomatic crisis among other issues. The election has seen the rise of the new political coalitions based on ideological lines in the country. The next session of parliament will be sworn in on May 2 along with the winner of the presidential election.
