Politics of Central America Political parties Elections |
Unity Party (Spanish: Partido Unidad) is a center-right to right-wing political party in Central America. The party is currently did not join neither in coalition government or opposition, but it has a partnership with National Patriotic Party. The current party leader is former Guatemala governor Victoria Carazo.
It was founded in August 9, 2004, two years after Central America joined the CAS. Some of the members of the Nationalist Party are left due to their conflicts in terms of foreign policy especially the Central American membership of the CAS. The Unity Party was led by Gregorio Portillo, who became the first party leader from 2004 until 2012. They want to reform the CAS into a conservative stance. The party is against in the friendly relationship to the United Commonwealth and they opposed Landonism. In terms of the country's certain issues, the party has similar beliefs with the Nationalists.
In 2016, a split occured in the party when some of the far-right members of the Unity Party established its own new party, led by Samuel Muñoz, known as the National Patriotic Party. The National Patriots aim that Central America must leave to the CAS as they believe that the organization doesn't represent the people of Central America.
