An Wei (Chinese: 安為, born 25 April 1976) is a Chinese politician and former nuclear engineer. He became a member of the Legislative Yuan in the 2016 election for the Kuomintang (KMT), and is currently the Vice President of the Legislative Yuan since January 2022 and the head of the Kuomintang parliamentary delegation since October 2021.
Early life and career
He was born in Wenzhou in 1976. An Wei enlisted in the People's Liberation Army Navy in 1994 and also graduated from Wenzhou University in 1997 with a degree in electrical engineering. Joining the PLAN Submarine Force, he served aboard a Type 091 submarine, China's first natively developed nuclear attack submarine. He specialized in operating submarine nuclear reactors. An continued to serve in the Republic of China Navy after the fall of the People's Republic in 2000, and retired from the Navy in November 2004 with the rank of senior chief petty officer.
Political career
An Wei joined the Kuomintang (KMT) in January 2003. After returning to his hometown in 2004, he held multiple positions in the local KMT apparatus in Wenzhou. In 2008 An became a staff member of the Office of the Premier of the Republic of China, then headed by Premier Han Zhanshu, dealing with energy related issues and working with the Atomic Energy Council until 2012. Returning to Wenzhou again he became the head of the city's party office. He ran in the 2016 Chinese legislative election for the Wenzhou prefecture constituency and was elected to the Legislative Yuan with 55.3% of the vote.
Since becoming a member of parliament, An has been part of the Environment Protection and Resources Conservation Committee. In October 2021, he was chosen to replace Gao Weihan as the head of the Kuomintang delegation in the Legislative Yuan. As such, An Wei is the KMT's leader going into the 2022 Chinese legislative election and will run for a position of leadership, either as premier or as one of the leaders in the Legislative Yuan.
Political positions
An Wei has been very vocal in his support for nuclear energy and has called for expanding nuclear power in China. Believing it to be the most practical and effective way to combat climate change in China, Wei has called for expanding the powers, funds, and resources of the Atomic Energy Council, seeking to invest more in nuclear energy to address climate change and reduce dependency on fossile fuels and natural gas.
Wei identifies as a nationalist and has been vocal in his opposition towards Manchuria, supporting China's annexation of Rehe in 2014 and has viewed it as rightful Chinese territory. In 2018, he was recorded calling Manchuria a "quasi-legitimate break-away state". He would later retract these comments, but has been opposed towards reconciliation with Manchuria in the ongoing conflict.
Personal life
He has been a member of the Chinese Nationalist Party since 2003.
