Duke of Tlaxcala
The Duke of Tlaxcala (Spanish: Duque de Tlaxcala) is an important title in the noble hierarchy of Mejico, belonging to the heir apparent of the Mejican throne, the Prince Imperial. Alongside the Duchy of Nueva Compostela, the Principality of the Fulgencines, the County of Béjar, and the Lordship of Ecab, titles also given to the Prince Imperial, the Duchy of Tlaxcala holds a prestigious role within the Mejican nobility.
The title holds great historical significance. Tlaxcala, an ancient city-state in central Mejico, played a important role during the Spanish conquest of Mejico. The Tlaxcalans formed an alliance with the Spanish conquistadors and played a crucial part in the fall of the Aztec Empire. As a tribute to their loyalty and invaluable contributions, the Spanish Crown granted them numerous privileges and honors, including hidalguías. The proper title of Duke of Tlaxcala was created by royal decree in 1826 by Kings Agustín I and María Carlota, as a title for the heir apparent of the newly-established Kingdom of Mejico.
Juan, Prince Imperial, is the current holder of the Duchy, holding the title since the accession of his father, Emperor Agustín VI, to the throne on 5 May 2014. The Duke has numerous responsibilities, including attending state functions, representing the royal family at diplomatic events, upholding Catholic values, and engaging in charitable and philanthropic endeavors. Apart from this, as the heir to the throne, the Duke is expected to receive training in governance and leadership, preparing them for their future role as monarch, participating in the administration of the small province of Tlaxcala.
