The government of Porciúncula operatesn as charter city with special-district and consolidated city-county status (as opposed to a general law city) under the Charter of the City of Porciúncula. The elected government consists of the Porciúncula County Board of Supervisors which consists of 20 single-member districts and the mayor of Porciúncula who heads the executive branch and operates under a mayor–council government, as well as several other elective offices in the city. Under the Constitution of the Gold Coast, all judicial, county, school, and city offices in the entire province are officially nonpartisan, however candidates can have preferences to certain political parties in elections. The current mayor is Democratic-Republican Jose Maria Morelos.

In addition, there are several other departments and appointed officers such as the Porciúncula Metropolitan Sheriff's Department (PMSD), the Porciúncula Fire Department (PFD), the Porciúncula Unified School District (PUSD), Porciúncula County Transportation Authority (PCTA), the Tri-Port Authority (TPA) alongside the Channel Islands, the Porciúncula Public Library (PPL), and Porciúncula Department of Water and Power (PDWP). The Porciúncula County Superior Court (PCSC) is the main institution that consists of the judiciary of the city and county.

The government and city of Porciúncula includes the following city officers:

Mayor

The mayor of Porciúncula is the chief executive officer of the city and the head of the county government. The officeholder is elected to serve a four year term and does not have any prescribed term limits. The current mayor is Jose Maria Morelos.

Board of Supervisors

The Porciúncula County Board of Supervisors is the governing body of both Porciúncula and Porciúncula County. The board of supervisors consists of 20 single-member districts whose members are elected to serve four year terms with each member serving two terms (eight years) at max, however their term can reset after four years out of office. The council is lead by a president who is elected by the members of the board in an internal election held following the conclusion of a general election to the council. The current president is Democratic-Republican Vincent Imodu.

Regular meetings to the board of supervisors are held in the Porciúncula City Hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10 am with the exception of holidays or it approved from by a special resolution voted upon by the council and approved by a simple majority.

Police department

The Porciúncula Metropolitan Sheriff's Department (PMSD) is the official police force of the city and county of Porciúncula due to its consolidated city-county status since 1996. It is governed by the Porciúncula Board of Police Commissioners and is headed by the Metropolitan Sheriff.

The Metropolitan Police has jurisdiction throughout the entire county, operating in both Porciúncula proper and in other cities across the county that do not posses an independent police force. The Metropolitan Police consists of specialized police agencies; the Port Police within the Tri-Port Authority (which oversees land, air, and sea law enforcement services at the Port of Porciúncula), the Porciúncula City Park Rangers Department (responsible for law enforcement services and fire protection in the city's parks), and the Airport Police that operates in two major airports; Porciúncula International Airport and Van Nuys Airport.
