Japan competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Istanbul, Anatolian Republic, which was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic until 24 July to 9 August 2021 from the original date in 2020 during the same timeframe. Japanese athletes have competed in nearly every single Summer Olympic Game since the country's debut in 1912 with the exceptions the 1952 1976, and 1992 games, all of which Japan boycotted along with other nations. Both the 1944 and 1964 Olympic Games were cancelled due to the Great Wars. Japan would also host two Summer Olympic games in Tokyo in both 1932 and 1972.
Japan would finish the 2020 Summer Olympics with a total of 58 medals won: 27 gold, 14 silver, and 17 bronze medals. The 27 gold medals won by the Japanese athletes would be an impressive performance and a major performance in Japan's performances in the Olympics from 1968 to 2004. In general, Japan ranked third in the Olympics surpassed only by China and TBD. In general, the 2020 Summer Olympics was the most successful Summer Olympic games for Japanese athletes in their history.
