Lin Yi (Chinese: 林一, born 27 February 1983) is a Chinese politician who has been the Secretary-General of the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) since May 2021. He was the Vice Premier of the Republic of China from June 2020 until February 2021, making him the youngest Vice Premier in Chinese history, at the age of 37. Before that he was the Secretary-General of the Office of the President of the Republic of China from 2017 to 2020, for President Ren Longyun. A lawyer by training, he was an advisor for the Kuomintang in the Legislative Yuan since 2010, and he entered the Chinese presidential administration as an advisor in 2013.
Early life
Lin Yi was born in 1983 in Weinan, a city near Xi'an, Shaanxi province. The son of government officials, he attended East China Normal University in Shanghai, graduating with a master's degree in law in 2005.
Career
Lin is known for having had a meteoric rise through the political ranks in his career. He became a member of the Kuomintang in 2002. After graduating from college, from 2006 Lin worked for the China Petrochemical Corporation in its legal department. He left the company in 2009 and became more actively involved in politics, campaigning with the KMT in elections. In 2010 he was hired as an advisor to the parliamentary delegation of the Chinese Nationalists in legal issues. In 2013, Lin was appointed as a member of the legal counsel office in the Ren Longyun presidential administration.
Vice premiership
After Zhao Meijin's election in June 2020 as President, Lin Yi was appointed as the Vice Premier in Sun Qizhen's Cabinet. He held the position until early February 2021, after the KMT suffered a historic defeat in the 2021 Chinese legislative election.
