Incumbent Prime Minister

Maggie Chan
Democratic-Republican

The next Sierran federal election is scheduled to take place no later than March 6, 2027. It will be held to determine the composition of the House of Commons, elect the next prime minister, and the next Government of the Kingdom of Sierra. If held on the planned date, it will be the first federal election to be held in accordance of the standard parliamentary calendar since 2013.

Background

In the previous election in 2022, Maggie Chan was elected prime minister following a government crisis that occurred after Chan withdrew the Democratic-Republican Party of Sierra to victory, becoming the first DRPS prime minister since Steven Hong was elected back in 2013. A snap-election, it was held in response to revelations of foreing interference by the United Commonwealth and Continental-aligned state actors in the 2021 Sierran federal election to support the re-election of Susan Kwon and her Social Democrats in government.

The ensuing election saw the DRPS score its biggest electoral win since 2013 while the Royalist Party under Kenneth O'Conner also saw major electoral gains, being only one seat behind the Democratic-Republican Party. With the election ending in a hung parliament and a mutual desire to block Kwon from regaining power, Chan agreed to form a grand coalition government with the Royalist Party and both of their respective allies, resulting in the creation of the first national Cornflower coalition government since the wartime War Minister of Christopher Rioux during the Great War in the 1930s. Seeing O'Conner becoming deputy prime minister under Chan.

Under Chan, her government oversaw sweeping policy changes and major course changes from her predecessor such as taking an antagonistic stance towards the United Commonwealth over the confirmed interference in the 2021 elections and signing the Economic Freedom and Trade Act against them after being stalled for over a year in parliament by Kwon and her allies. Chan also rescinded several Kwon-era domestic policies, including labor-related policies, that would lead to labor disputes and protests across the country. The coalition itself was able to agree upon these positions, however internal disagreement would emerge over the passing of the Academic Integrity and Protection Act which severely restricted the ability of PSAs to ban books in schools and instituted anti-discrimination protections of transgender and other LGBT+ Sierrans.

Party leadership changes

Libertarian Party

Following the underwhelming showing in the 2022 election, Ryan Porter of the Libertarian Party of Sierra formally announced his resignation as the party's leader, citing its poor showing and the party's diminished status within national politics, falling from one of the Big Three to a minor party with minimal influence and presence in parliament. Following his resignation, a new leadership election was announced by the Libertarian Executive Committee to determine who would be Porter's successor. The ensuing race would see Member of Parliament Jethro Kubrick from Maricopa and former MP Sarah Behrman emerging as the frontrunners, with Behrman emerging as the eventual winner on the second round.

Democratic-Republican Party

Social Democrats

Despite losing the 2022 election and under immense political controversy, Susan Kwon remained Leader of the Social Democrats with the party backing her remaining as its leader, receiving the backing of the party's base and rank and file. Kwon would further commit to supporting republicanism and socialism, doubling down on progressive anti-capitalist rhetoric and policies.
