Nicolas Matthew McCarty (born February 27th, 1968) is a Alaskan politician serving as the TBD President of Alaska since 2018. A member of the National Union Party, McCarty previously served as a member of the National Council of Alaska, representing the Anchorage Province from 2008 to 2018 and served as a member of the House of Commons of Alaska from 2006 to 2008.

Born in the City of Anchorage, McCarty would graduate from the University of Juneau with degrees in English language and education. After graduating from university, McCarty would become a English teacher, teaching English composition and literature at Anchorage High School. He would be a relatively popular teacher amongst his students. He would gain citywide fame after saving his students from a bus crash, being recognized by the Anchorage City Council for his actions. In 2006, McCarty would enter politics, running and being elected to the House of Commons as a member of the National Union Party. As a member of the House of Commons, McCarty would support liberal conservative and moderate legislation, becoming one of the most moderate members of the chamber. McCarty would serve one term in the House of Commons before being elected to the National Council. Like his House of Commons tenure, McCarty supported liberal conservative and moderate legislation, and was credited with being the chamber's central negotiator between the right and left. During both his tenures as a House Commoner and a National Councilor, McCarty would gain nationwide fame and approval for his moderate positions. McCarty's nationwide approval would allow him to run for president in the 2018 Alaskan presidential election, winning both the National Union primary and late the presidential election in November.

McCarty would be inaugerated in Juneau on November 18th, ten days after his election victory. As President of Alaska, McCarty has continued to support liberal conservative positions, supporting legislation from both his party and the Liberal Democratic-led opposition. In 2019, McCarty signed the Alaskan Fairness Act, which added protections for members of Alaska's indigenous population. He would also sign the Protect our Economy Act, which lessen government regulations on Alaska's prominent oil and mining industry, which make up a good portion of the Alaskan economy. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began, McCarty would be praised for his quick reaction to the pandemic and for his actions as the pandemic spread in Alaska. As of April of 2021, McCarty has an approval rating of 59%, one of the highest approval ratings for a sitting Alaskan president.

Politically, McCarty identifies as a liberal conservative and economic liberal. McCarty is supportive of same-sex marriages and addition protections for minorities in Alaska. However, he opposes the creation of hate crime and hate speech legislation. McCarty is also an opponent of abortion, but does not support banning the practice, and is an opponent of increased government regulations on Alaskan businesses, but has supported regulations revolving around climate and nature protection. McCarty opposes the creation of a single-payer healthcare system and a public health insurance, believing that the federal government would "provide sub-par services" compared to private healthcare and health insurance. On foreign policy, McCarty is a supporter of the Conference of American States and supports greater federalization of the organization, but is against total unification. McCarty also is supportive of Alaska's involvement in military alliances such as NATO and the Indo-Pacific Treaty Organization, believing they can help curve Chinese influence in the world.

Early life, education, and career

Nicolas Matthew McCarty was born on February 27th, 1968 in Anchorage, Alaska to Benjamin and Jamie McCarty. His father, Benjamin, was a retired veteran who served in Great War II while his mother, Jamie, was a school teacher, working at Anchorage Public Middle School. McCarty would be born the first son and third child of the McCarty family, going on to have five siblings, two older sisters and three younger brothers. The McCarty family would live in urban Anchorage in a upper middle-class setting. McCarty would have a close relationship with his father, adopting most of his political and societal views at a young age.

At the age of four, McCarty would begin his educational career, attending Anchorage City Elementary School from kindergarten up until the fifth grade. He would promote to Anchorage Public Middle School in 1979, being in his mother's class for his eighth grade year. After middle school, McCarty would promote to high school, attending Anchorage High School. While at high school, McCarty would be apart of the school's ice hockey team, though would leave the team during his senior year after receiving a injury that would put him out of commission. During McCarty's senior year at Anchorage High School, he would register with the National Union Party, following in the footsteps of his father. However, he would largely remain politically inactive. McCarty would graduate from Anchorage High School in 1986. Immediately after high school, McCarty would attempt to join the Alaskan Army, however he would be denied due to underlying health conditions. Being denied entry into the Alaskan Army would devastate McCarty, who wanted to join the army to impress his father. In 1988, McCarty would begin attending the University of Juneau, hoping to obtain a degree in both English language and education...
