The Senate of Liberta or the Libertan Senate (Latin: Senatus Libertae) is the national legislature of Liberta. It is the oldest legislature and democratic institution in the world, founded in 36 AD, 1987 years ago. Based on the Roman senate, it has largely remained identical throughout history, albeit with some modernization and democratization efforts, such as the direct election of Consul since the Great Reformation of 1707. Because of the legal immunity to any modification of the legislative system, the Senate has historically maintained several unwritten laws and customs, many of which survive today.
As of 2024, the senate is comprised of three major parties, Progressus, Democratia Nova, and the Conservative Coalition, along with three minor parties, Pro Populi, Front, and Greens and Lefts. Unlike in many other democracies, the Senate is not the upper-house, as the Libertan government is unicameral. The etymology can instead be traced to the Roman equivalent.
