As of January 2021, the mixtape has been downloaded over 1,245,000 times on MixxSpin and certified diamond.
Background and promotion
In 2012, Hykeem Terrace would begin producing under the moniker "Wonderkidd", uploading his beats to YouTube and collaborating with local artists in the San Francisco underground rap scene such as Jei Trey and Bootywaterr. After the release of Yung Uzi Mane's My Story, Wonderkidd would re-post the mixtape on his Bubbler account. Wonderkidd would later meet Yung Uzi Mane in October 2013 after a concert in San Francisco City. Wonderkidd has said that he was able to get features for Stain Mixx by joining Black Stain Collective and moving to Porciúncula in spring 2014. Wonderkidd would later sign to Yung Uzi Mane's own Sticks & Stones label shortly before the release of the mixtape.
A number of songs released on the mixtape were previously released on SoundCloud, including "New Whip" featuring Bootywaterr, "Off The Chain" featuring Jei Trey, and "Stupid" featuring Gleesh Reese. The lead single released in anticipate for the mixtape, however, was "Diamond Choke" featuring Killa Cartier, which premiered on May 20, 2014, on SoundCloud. The second single, "Strong" featuring Gleesh Reese and Ballari, permeried a week later. After Wonderkidd signed a deal with Avocado Records, "Diamond Choke" was later remixed with features from Cousin Whizz, .726 Murki, and Yung Uzi Mane, which was then released to iTunes as a single in anticipation for the mixtape's re-issue on December 5, 2014.
Critical reception
Stain Mixx received positive reviews from music critics. Ken Tucker, writing for The Porciúncula Times, praised Wonderkidd's "futuristic synthesisers and slowed down samples" and stated that "Stain Mixx is a landmark album for the rising trap scene as Wonderkidd effortlessly incorperate elements of Syxie and Porniculia sounds to create a trap symphony for the streets". Giving the mixtape a B+, Jefferson Goodman of HipHopXL wrote that the mixtape "is saturated with Wonderkidd's idiosyncratic earworm tricks: mid-tempo wavy beats, inebriated syncopated synths and gloomy piano arrangements", praising the collaborations and "raw" aesthetic of the mixtape's presentation.
Commercial performance
Stain Mixx moved 13,570 album-equivalent units upon release, debuting at number 64 on Sunset 100, later being certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on June 20, 2017.
