- Cineworld announces that they are closing all of its cinemas in the United Kingdom and Anglo-America, putting 5,500 jobs at risk, following a reported 1.3 billion financial loss since the start of the pandemic.

- Russia reports 10,499 new cases in the last 24 hours, a record high since May 15, when the outbreak was at its peak and lockdowns were imposed all over the country. This is the first time since May that Russia has reported over 10,000 daily cases.

- The United Kingdom surpasses 500,000 total cases after Public Health England reported a backlog of infections left out of their daily figures between September 25 and October 2 leading to a record 22,961 cases reported in the last 24 hours. 15,841 cases were not reported previously due to a glitch from the day before and did not pass data dashboards used for contact tracing.

- Citizens of New Caledonia head to the polls to vote on whether or not to support independence from France with 180,000 people being registered to vote.
- With 53,26% of the votes, New Caledonians vote against independence from France with turnout reportedly very high. Prime Minister Oscar de Saint-Just welcomes the result as a "sign of confidence" in the kingdom.
