Trinity County is a county located in the K.S. province of the Gold Coast. As of the 2020 Census, the county's population was 693,429, making it the fifth-most populous county in the Gold Coast and the fourteenth-most in the country. The largest city is Rancho Sepulveda while the county seat is Centinenla Springs. It is located primarily in the South Bay region of the Southeastern Gold Coast which includes the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It shares its only land borders with the City and County of Porciúncula to the north and east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south. The county shares maritime borders with the Étoile Parish of the Channel Islands. It contains ten incorporated cities and two unincorporated communities. Trinity County is part of the Saintiana or Creole Coast region, forming its northwesternmost extent.
The county is included in the Porciúncula–Grands Ballons–St. Anne Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Greater Porciúncula Area (Southwest Corridor). Much of the county is suburban and coastal, with the population concentrated towards the insular center of the county around the largest cities: Rancho Sepulveda, Centinenla Springs, and Hanequart. The Beach Cities (Moonstone Beach, Santa Fe Beach, Bridgeport Beach, and Burnettshire) form the western coastline, while Palos Verdes City and its unincorporated suburban neighborhoods straddle the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Historically, Trinity County formed the southwestern end of the City and County of Porciúncula. It was partitioned from Porciúncula in 1918 by legislative action of the Gold Coast Provincial Legislature. The northern islands of the Channel Islands were a part of Trinity County until 1999 when the results of the Gold Coast Proposition 11 were enacted.
History
Trinity County was historically the homeland of the indigenous Tongva people whose population stretched throughout the present-day county and beyond elsewhere. The area was heavily used and frequented by the Tongva due to the presence of natural springs and salt lakes. During Spanish exploration and settlement, Spaniard settlers noted the area's ideal grazing conditions and accessible proximity to the coast. In 1784, the Spanish government rewarded a land grant for Rancho San Pedro to Juan Jose Dominguez. It was the largest land grant made in the area before it was partitioned with the creation of Rancho de Los Palos Verdes.
