The Polytinaris Commonwealth was a long-lived democratic federation that controlled the Polytinaris System, a triple star system located within the Milky Way's Far 3 kpc arm, roughly 30,000 light years from the Sun. Also known as the Commonwealth, it was a generally stable nation for most of its life and was built on a principle of inter-species cooperation and communication between its three major member races: the Rorks of the Kalagors System, the Aerlons of the Tinaria System, and the Gesmians of the Genenia System.

The Commonwealth was one of the longest-lasting nations known to Polytinarian records: it existed from the year 1329 - when it was created after a union between the system's two previous ruling powers, the Kalagors United States and the Tinaria-Genenia Union - all the way up until 1998, when it was dissolved following a brutal rebellion that ultimately led to the formation of the Tessian Hegemony. During its almost 700-year history, the Commonwealth endured several significant crises such as the Everwood Core incident of 1509 and Ixmerian Rebellion of 1747, the latter of which causing great upheaval within its society and prompting government reform. At that time, the Commonwealth existed as a loose confederation between its three member systems, but after 1747 a more proper government was put into place that saw it turn into a true federal state. Alas, this was not universally well-received: the new Commonwealth government was plagued by growing rivalries between Kalagors and Tinaria, in addition to several government scandals and the emergence of a foe in the People's Fairness Party, that saw stagnation become the norm for much of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
