The Polytinaris Commonwealth was a long-lived democratic federation that controlled the Polytinaris System, a triple star system located within the Milky Way's Far 3 kpc arm, roughly 30,000 light years from the Sun. Also known as Polytinaris or most commonly as the Commonwealth, it was a generally stable nation for most of its life and was built on a principle of inter-species cooperation and communication between its three major member races: the Rorks of the Kalagors System, the Aerlons of the Tinaria System, and the Gesmians of the Genenia System.
The Commonwealth was one of the longest-lasting nations known to Polytinarian records: it existed from the year 1329 - when it was created after a union between the system's two previous ruling powers, the Kalagors United States and the Tinaria-Genenia Union - all the way up until 1998, when it was dissolved following a brutal rebellion that ultimately led to the formation of the Tessian Hegemony. During its almost 700-year history, the Commonwealth endured several significant crises such as the Everwood Core incident of 1509 and Ixmerian Rebellion of 1747, the latter of which causing great upheaval within its society and prompting government reform. At that time, the Commonwealth existed as a loose confederation between its three member systems, but after 1747 a more proper government was put into place that saw it turn into a true federal state. Alas, this was not universally well-received: the new Commonwealth government was plagued by growing rivalries between Kalagors and Tinaria, in addition to several government scandals and the emergence of a foe in the People's Fairness Party, that saw stagnation become the norm for much of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
The final nail in the coffin for the Commonwealth was the discovery of the Palaeroni, a long-extinct alien race that once ruled over Polytinaris and likely several more solar systems, by the aerlon woman Tessia von Gretolia in 1995. With its already deeply fragmented population, added further onto by the the stress of a military buildup led by Tessia and her cohorts, the nation buckled at the seams and completely collapsed during a violent revolution in March-April 1998. In its place was the much more left-wing, totalitarian, and supremacist Hegemony, which would go on to control dozens of other star systems. The Hegemony fell in 2122 and was replaced with the Stellar Commonwealth, viewed as a spiritual successor to the original Polytinaris Commonwealth.
During its existence, the Commonwealth practiced two forms of government. For the majority of its history, between the 14th and mid-18th centuries, it existed as a decentralized union between the three star systems of Polytinaris, with significant degrees of power devolved to its member worlds. Levels of autonomy were enough to the point where some planets, notably the aerlon home world of Tertan, had multiple semi-independent countries on them; the Commonwealth’s government at that time existed more as an organization dedicated to upholding laws and promoting social and cultural cooperation. But after the failed Ixmerian Rebellion in 1747, the Polytinaris Commonwealth’s government underwent great reform. The state morphed into a more proper federation with strengthened governing power and less autonomy granted to its constituent states. Due to soured relations & an emerging rivalry between the Kalagors and Tinaria Systems however, the Commonwealth’s new government quickly became incompetent and riddled with political corruption, at the expense of the peoples in the Genenia System.
History
Formation & early years (1329-1400)
Before the formation of the Polytinaris Commonwealth, the three component subsystems of the Polytinaris System and their native inhabitants - the squid-like Rorks, the humanoid Aerlons, and the bug-like Gesmians, along with the less technologically advanced Iphilians - all existed as independent civilizations which collectively had little contact with one another.
