The Tessian Hegemony, also sometimes referred to as the Tessian Empire, the Tessian Star Empire, the Tessian Star Hegemony, the Star Hegemony, the Benevolent Hegemony, or most often as the Hegemony, is an interstellar hyperpower originating from the habitable terrestrial planet Tertan, located within the Far 3 kpc arm of the Milky Way. A far-left communist state, the Hegemony is known for its supremacism and speciesism towards the Aerlons (a race of very human-like aliens originally native to the nation's home planet) and their disenfranchisement of all others within the nation - a trait that has also sometimes led to it being nicknamed the Aerlon Hegemony or the Tertanian Hegemony. At its territorial maximum in the late 21st century, the Tessian Hegemony had control over a total of 47 individual solar systems including its home system, the Polytinaris System.

The Hegemony was founded after a rebellion led by its soon-to-be leader Tessia von Gretolia began against the previous rulers of the triple Polytinaris system, the moderately centrist Polytinaris Commonwealth, a nation which had ruled over said system for many centuries of peace and prosperity, though had been in decline for around one hundred years by the time of the Tessian revolution in the year 1998. Forcing her totalitarian rule over its three component solar systems through use of carefully planned military invasions, Tessia's leadership ensured that the forces of the Commonwealth and other resistance militaries were brutally crushed in a final battle around the habitable moon Kebo on April 17. Once that was completed, the Hegemony underwent a period of interstellar expansionism, conquering dozens of other solar systems and enslaving whatever native aliens happened to inhabit said systems. By the time of its peak extent in the mid-21st century, it controlled a total of 47 different star systems, including Polytinaris itself.

After enjoying several decades of unrivaled dominance over the Polytinaris Spur region, fortunes went south for the Tessian Hegemony starting in the year 2113, when it first made contact with and mounted a war against the Kingdom of Ironia-Ursonberg. Although the Hegemony was much stronger than its adversary, it ultimately was forced into a peace deal with no gains after a rebellion of multiple alien races it had subjugated many years prior gained significant traction and inflicted heavy losses on the Benevolent Star Navy. The situation soured further after the unexplained death of Tessia von Gretolia in March of 2119 instigated a second conflict between the two nations. By this point, the once great Tessian Hegemony buckled under the strain of non-aerlon revolts, a political power struggle, and poor leadership by its new Benevolent Premier Hanelia Siaena. The nation collapsed on September 10, 2122, and after some further infighting within its remains, it was replaced with the Stellar Commonwealth, a liberal democracy aimed at reconstructing good relations between its member species.

The Tessian Hegemony is a left-wing socialist state, with almost every aspect of its economy (save for some niche industries like the arts & entertainment sector) being regulated and operated by the state. Most of these large state-owned companies derive their output from non-aerlon slave labor, with alien workers being subjected to appalling living conditions and frequent episodes of physical abuse from their aerlon masters. Some slave-owners claim to see their aliens as "real people" though treat them as animals and deem them to be inferior anyway. Despite discrimination and mistreatment of aliens, aerlons have many social freedoms (as long as the protection of such freedoms does not jeopardize the integrity of the Hegemony) with legislation protecting the rights of minority and dark-skinned aerlons, providing accessible facilities for disabled and neurodivergent individuals, providing women access to abortion & birth control, and supporting the LGBTQ+ community with protecting same-sex marriages and gender-conforming care. Non-aerlons have none of these freedoms, however; public execution is the most common form of criminal punishment for them.

Though legally considered an atheist state, most aerlons of the Hegemony have beliefs that they are the chosen successors by the now extinct Palaeroni race and have been delegated with a task of conquering and cleansing the known universe for their satisfaction. According to ancient texts found within ruins constructed throughout Polytinaris, the Palaeroni had control of the entire galaxy and ruled it under a state known as the First Hegemony. Despite there being little legal state sponsorship of this belief, the Hegemony in practice promotes the religion to a significant extent, conducting genocides and forced exterminations of other religions and faiths on the grounds of its superiority.

History

Background (before 1998)

Flag of the Polytinaris Commonwealth
Flag of the Polytinaris Commonwealth, the predecessor nation of the Tessian Hegemony.

Before the rise of the Hegemony, the Polytinaris System and its three component stars - Kalagors, Tinaria, and Genenia - were ruled by a democratic federation known as the Polytinaris Commonwealth. The Commonwealth was home to three major spacefaring member races: the Rorks of the Kalagors System, the Aerlons of the Tinaria System, and the Gesmians of the Genenia System. There also existed a fourth, less advanced alien species known as the Iphilians, who were native to the supergiant terrestrial planet Hyparspynar in the Kalagors System.

Although the Commonwealth was a long-lived, very stable nation, it had its problems and was beginning to decline across increasingly ideological divides starting in the late 18th century after a rebellion in 1747. By the mid-20th century, the nation was on the verge of economic recession and greatly stalling in its bureaucratic and governmental processes spearheaded by an inherent rivalry between the inhabitants of Kalagors and the residents of Tinaria - Genenia's citizens were on the losing end of these disputes and suffered the worst out of the three stars.

The tipping point came in the summer of 1995, when a young aerlon female named Tessia von Gretolia made a tremendous discovery on the planet Tertan: ancient alien ruins of an enigmatic race known as the Palaeroni. Through the efforts of her and several other key scientists (mostly those affiliated with a certain Tinarian political party, the radical socialist People's Fairness Party), it was proven that these aliens had once ruled over a massive empire, named the First Hegemony, controlling most, or even all, of the galaxy at its maximum extent over two billion years ago. Being a politician herself and widely outspoken perpetrator of change within the Commonwealth, Tessia managed to utilize the discovery of the Palaeroni as fuel for her own ideals and goals of weaponizing and preparing for a revolution against it.

Not everyone agreed with her, though. One of Tessia's more significant opponents during the pre-Hegemony years was Jalian Halenia, another member of the same party and also the older brother of Tessia's romantic partner Yelenia Halenia. Jalian was especially against Tessia's pro-LGBTQ+ policies that she was pushing to the population of the nation, as well as an opponent of her publicly out relationship with Yelenia. He and his followers, the Jalianites, created a second divide within the PFP during 1996 and 1997; by 1998 this had become aggressive and had devolved into rioting and violent fighting between the two sides.

The Great Revolution (1998)

The Polytinaris System
A combined map of the Polytinaris System, the home star system of the Tessian Hegemony.

The Great Tessian Revolution began in February of 1998, instigated first by the tragic & unexpected death of Yelenia in a suspected murder perpetrated by Jalian. In retaliation to this, Tessia Gretolia and her four most significant allies - Hanelia Siaena, Quevestin Garmania, Thyosius Tigran, and Teagonia eg Gretolia, the Great Quartet - immediately declared the full secession of the Tinaria System from the Polytinaris Commonwealth. During the interim of time between the discovery of the Palaeroni ruins and the beginning of the revolution, Tessia and her cohorts had amassed several dozens of combat-capable warships from the Commonwealth's military, the UJAF, and had even designed their own superweapon: the fearsome Dezirius-class battle cruiser, armed with its signature planetary razer central cannon.

The rebellion began with the four generals of the Great Quartet separating into individual groups to conquer the star system, each led by one of the four constructed Dezirii. The Commonwealth's military struggled to contain the rebellion and suffered severe losses during the secession/invasion of Tinaria, from the large mining station of Norbidia (destroyed in a turning point battle around the ice giant Tess on March 10 with the loss of over 50,000) to the planetoid Calgoier (completely obliterated by the world razer cannon of the Dezirius-class Acahaye on March 15 with an astounding 13.4 million casualties). Jalian Halenia also attempted to stage his own counter-revolution with the Tinaria Freedom Front movement - which emerged as first a rival political party but later gained weaponry of its own, joining forces with the UJAF around the ringed gas giant Palemarma on March 18-20. Despite initially having the upper hand, even this combined fleet did not prevail and was defeated by Tessia's rebellion, which advanced onwards to the other component star systems of Polytinaris.

Government

Tessia von Gretolia, the founder and first Benevolent Premier of the Tessian Hegemony.

The Tessian Hegemony is an autocratic totalitarian dictatorship: its ruler, the Benevolent Premier of the Tessian Hegemony, exercises total and complete control over all aspects of the nation's government and society. She[2] reserves the right to veto or overturn any decisions, rulings, or sessions of legislation done within the Hegemony's government. The position of Benevolent Premier is arbitrary and held for life upon ascension. Although it was never done during the Hegemony's existence, the Benevolent Premier could resign from her position at any time if the need arose. There were only two Premiers: Tessia von Gretolia (1998-2119) and Hanelia Siaena (2119-2122).

The next four most powerful individuals within the Hegemony were the Great Quartet - initially consisting of Hanelia Siaena, Thyosius Tigran, Quevestin Garmania, and Teagonia Evelon Gretolia. These four individuals were historically close friends and colleagues of Tessia herself, and for much of the Hegemony’s existence they all exerted a pivotal amount of influence on its society, politics, and military.

The state legislature of the Tessian Hegemony is the Opulenciliom, a body consisting of roughly 100 members from all forty-seven of the Hegemony’s colony systems. It functions similarly to any other national legislative body, having officials elected to consecutive terms in cycles every five Tertanian years (approximately every four Earth years) and hosting sessions & votes on a variety of Tessian issues. However, the Opulenciliom holds much less true governing power than not only the Benevolent Premier and the Great Quartet, but also to some high-ranking individuals of the military. Additionally, it has no political parties, unlike other multi-party legislatures. Furthermore, instilling the Hegemony’s speciesism the Opulenciliom only allows aerlons to participate in it and it is strongly supporting of the nation’s discriminatory policies towards non-aerlons.

Military

The military of the Tessian Hegemony is widely touted and publicized as the most powerful within the Polytinaris Spur. At its peak during the late 21st century, a combined total of nearly 2 billion aerlons (non-aerlons, which mostly held either extremely low-ranking positions or were used as unpaid slaves, were excluded from this count) enlisted in either of the two major Tessian military divisions, the Benevolent Army or the Benevolent Star Navy. Over 135 million more also joined its military police and special weapons force, the Gretolian Order.

The Hegemony's military on average accounted for approximately one-quarter of its entire annual government spending per year during peacetime and could rise to nearly triple this amount when the nation was at war. Most notably, although the military possessed large amounts of superweapons, it also relied on advanced tactics and skill to complement its immense brute strength. This combination of powerful weapons and intelligent commanders is regarded to be the main reason why it excelled so well in battle, at least during Tessia von Gretolia's premiership.

The Star Paladins are a group of 10 highly skilled military officers, tacticians, and soldiers who were some of the Hegemony’s most important and most influential individuals during its later years. Formed in 2062, the Paladins operated as a joint subdivision of both the Gretolian Order and the Benevolent Army. They fulfilled many roles: as personal guards for the Premier and her Quartet, as commanders of planetary battle units, as Gretolian Order law enforcement officials, and even as high-ranking admirals in the Star Navy who commanded entire fleets.

Autarchia noi Nallonia, the last individual to hold the position of the First Star Paladin.

Star Paladins were selected and chosen for their roles by the Benevolent Premier herself, all of them being picked particularly for their tactical experience, high intelligence and ability, and their deep inherent pride for the Hegemony itself. When the Star Paladins were established as a group, there were only five of them, but as time went on the number grew to a total of ten. Their assigned numbers had no relation to their actual strength or ability, although some Paladins were stronger than others.

At their greatest membership in 2113, there were ten Paladins: Autarchia noi Nallonia, Danica Esau, Doramania von Florazelvia, Elmann Vezrok, Lukeneum Kewell, Uecoy von Florazelvia, Onictar Ollindari, Telpaena Tevelexina, Zaina Tigran, and Rhenepheus Kakt.

Benevolent Star Navy

The Benevolent Star Navy (also commonly referred to as the Star Navy) is the Hegemony's space force and was the nation's primary military division due to its spacefaring interstellar nature. Their operations were vast and far-reaching, fulfilling many tasks conducted within star systems themselves or in the interstellar space located between them. The Star Navy predated the Tessian Hegemony itself, being founded in early 1997 over a year before its creation. At its peak during the late 21st century, the Benevolent Star Navy operated approximately 6.4 million starships and had over 1.7 billion enlisted personnel.

Benevolent Admirals

Pai Forgellica Cordellica, an example of a Benevolent Admiral.

There are several officer ranks one can hold within the Benevolent Star Navy, with rank ascension being determined by a number of factors such as technical expertise, combat prowess, tactical & strategic intelligence, and loyalty to higher leadership and to the Tessian Hegemony itself. The highest rank of these was the venerable title of Benevolent Admiral, who were along with the Star Paladins some of the most powerful people in the entire nation aside from the Benevolent Premier. Benevolent Admirals carried out a variety of special duties specific only to themselves - most importantly, they had the task of commanding invasion fleets of Star Navy ships into enemy star systems, being primary commanders of the Hegemony’s wars against other civilizations.

The Great Quartet were the first Benevolent Admirals, and they were also the only ones for the Hegemony’s earliest days until the year 2016, when a series of reforms significantly overhauled the command structure of the military. After that, the rank was opened to other admirals individually hand-picked by the Benevolent Premier. In the year 2113, there were a total of twelve benevolent admirals: Hanelia Siaena, Quevestin Garmania, Teagonia & Leialennia Gretolia, Autarchia noi Nallonia, Nexzius von Keppen, Dege Hecanier, Pai Forgelica Cordellica, Nor Uric, Genevievia Anggrek-Alvaro, Elmann Vezrok, & Bellonia Liura.
