The Hijo Predilecto (meaning "Favorite son") system is an honorary distinction awarded in many municipalities in Spain and provinces in Iberoamerica to individuals who have stood out for their outstanding contributions in various fields, such as culture, science, sports, politics, or society in general. This distinction is a recognition of the merits and achievements of individuals who have left a positive mark on their locality and who have contributed to its development and prestige.

The title of Favorite SOn is a way of expressing the pride and recognition of a community towards one of its most outstanding members. It is a way of thanking and valuing the effort and commitment that person has shown to his or her place of origin and to society in general. In addition, by awarding this distinction, the City Council also seeks to highlight the inspiring example that this figure represents for local citizens, especially for the younger generations.

The basis for awarding the title of Hijo Predilecto varies depending on the locality and may include criteria such as professional career, achievements in the artistic, scientific, or sports field, social commitment, or service to the community. Generally, a proposal is presented and must be approved by the city council plenary, where the merits and relevance of the person in question are discussed and valued. Once the nomination is approved, a solemn ceremony is held to award the distinction, where the work and achievements of the new Favorite Son are publicly recognized. This ceremony may include speeches, cultural performances, a biography of the honoree, and a symbolic presentation of the title and parchment as a symbol of this recognition.

Throughout history, numerous personalities from different fields have been recognized as Hijos Predilectos by municipalities in Spain, Mejico, New Granada, Argentina, and Peru. Among them are writers, artists, scientists, sportsmen, politicians, and philanthropists, whose work has left an indelible mark on their community and contributed to the progress and prestige of their locality.
