Indira Johannesen (born October 10, 1965) is a Sierran politician serving as the Governor of San Francisco since 2020. Before becoming governor, Johannesen served as the Lieutenant Governor of San Francisco under Terry Scott. As the governor, Johannesen is also the leader of the San Francisco Democratic-Republican Party, assuming the position shortly before her inauguration.
Johannesen was born in San Francisco City, San Francisco, eventually attending and graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1990 with a degrees in law and political administration. Immediately after graduating from university, Johannesen entered the law profession, joining Dark and White legal firm in 1991. Johannesen participated in a number of prolific cases in the San Francisco province, including Grant v. Moore and Wagner v. Morris. Johannesen attempted to enter politics in 2005 as a Democratic-Republican, running for a seat in the San Francisco Provincial Assembly, but failing to defeat Social Democrat Leroy Winifred. However, due to her provincial profile and popularity, she was chosen to serve as lieutenant governor under Terry Scott after the 2008 San Francisco general election being approved and was sworn in on August 12. Johannesen became the first women, Indian-Sierran, and African-Sierran, to become Lieutenant Governor in San Franciscan history.
As the Lieutenant Governor, Johannesen was the President of the San Francisco Provincial Assembly. Unlike many of her predecessors, Johannesen attended and oversaw every meeting of the San Francisco Provincial Assembly, ensuring the passage of progressive legislation. Though publicly displayed as a tag team, Johannesen and Scott were rivals behind the scenes, largely due to their influence over the province and the provincial Democratic-Republican Party. In 2020, Scott elected not to run for a third term and ran for the House of Commons instead, allowing Johannesen to become the frontrunner in the 2020 San Francisco general election, eventually winning and becoming the Governor of San Francisco in August. As Governor, Johannesen has taken many actions in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued many of Scott's progressive policies as well. As of January of 2021, she is one of the most popular governors in Sierra.
Johannesen identifies as a social liberal, social democrat, and a progressive. Johannesen supports the creation of hate crime legislation in order to combat racism, being a outspoken supporter of such legislation after the Assassination of Steven Hong in 2016. Johannesen is also a supports the legalization and normalization of the use of recreational drugs. She also supports the codification of abortion into the Constitution of Sierra, the implementation of affirmative action nationwide, and the nationalization of the healthcare industry, supporting the National Health Protection Act of 2020. Johannesen is a staunch critic of the Royalist Party of Sierra, claiming the party is a "criminal organization". She is also a critic of the Monarchy, though not as radically as her predecessor. On foreign policy, Johannesen is against normalization of relations with the United Commonwealth, which largely goes against her party, citing their human rights abuses. She supports stronger ties with the Conference of American States, eventually hoping for Anglo-American unification.
