Lág (officially the Canton of Lág; /lɑg/, Kalhan: [lag]) is one of the fourteen cantons of Kalșeri. It is the eighth-largest canton by area, the second-most populated canton and the fourth-most densely populated canton in the country. It borders Chalmersville and New Lothian to the northwest, Kalúen to the southwest and Takalim to the northeast, and surrounds the city-canton of Evalria.
Due to its central position, Lág has served as the logistical hub for Kalșeri throughout history, for agriculture and, starting from the late 18th century, for industry. Plymouth has the largest cargo port in the country, and the second in terms of tourist traffic, after Goldshore, Kalúen.
Lágan culture is highly diverse in the Belt (the counties immediately surrounding Evalria) thanks to many immigrant communities settling there, whereas rural communities tend to be more homogenous.
Name
Lág owes its name to the homonymous pre-colonial royal house; the most plausible theory for how is that the term Lág was born out of a combination between the terms lana (flatland) and gieri (population).
Another theory has the term be derived from the terms la (moon) and gia (people).
Geography
Three rivers flow within the borders of the canton: Sayoo, Gannimel, Lág. Despite bearing its name, the Lág river only flows within the canton for its final kilometers before flowing to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Flanúr Flatland constitutes much of the eastern portion of the territory. The Lágan Hill Range dominates the northwestern half of the territory.
Lág constitues the geographical center of Radina, the biggest of the islands constituting Kalșeri, which has an oceanic climate (Köppen classification Cfb).
History
Pre-colonial period
Excavations show that the modern-day canton began to be settled around 10,000 BC, and the first crops are dated to a few centuries after that. According to the Chronicles of Lág, the birth of the true Lágan tribe coincided with the coronation of Ausvan I, the first King of Lág, in 300 BC.
After a long period of quiet expansion, King Rovuan VII conquered all other tribes in the early 9th century, ordered Lágrél to be rebuilt to his image and moved his court there. By 1099, however, Lágrél had been abandoned in favor of Evalria, which grew thanks to its pivotal role in inland navigation on the Sayoo and Gannimel rivers.
Outside the city walls, agriculture continued to be practiced by an overwhelming majority of subjects.
British control
After the English colonization of Radina in 1669, King's Port was built in the early 18th century in an effort to connect the Dominion of Callen to the other British Colonies.
Like in the rest of the Dominion, Kalhan place names were displaced in favor of English ones: modern-day Lág was divided into New Essex, New Middlesex, New Wessex and New Warwickshire, and Evalria was renamed New Leeds and placed under special administration as the capital city of the Dominion.
The agricultural status of rural communities was retained under the British.
Contemporary history
In 1783, the city of Evalria and the canton of Lág were given new borders that roughly followed the precolonial tribal subdivisions, and sent two separate groups of delegates for the negotiation of the constitution. Following the ratification of the Carnafarry Statute in 1794, the separation of Evalria from the rest of Lág was made official. The capital city of Lág was consequently moved to Branbury.
From the late 19th century onwards, Lág became a common destination for European immigrants; the richer ones settled in the villages in the countryside, and the rest began to populate the cities surrounding Evalria, finding work in the growing number of factories.
The Kalșerian automotive industry traces back to 1899, when German immigrant John F. Wilheimer I founded the Wilheimer car factory in Westphalia.
In 1954, the Chalmersville dispute with New Lothian and Urgel over exclusive functions of essential city services came to an end after Chalmersville was made its own canton.
