Government and politics

Executive

Tigupoke is the only canton where the executive power is not wielded by one person, but rather by a collegial body: the Cantonal Council of Tigupoke, which consists of 11 people, each heading a cabinet position.

Since 1959, Tigupoke has been governed by a party system where the Social Cooperation Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Farmers' Party each receive three seats, and the remaining two are reserved for minor parties.

Legislative

The unicameral General Assembly of Tigupoke is the legislative body of the canton. The General Assembly comprises 50 seats that are elected through a single canton-wide list with the Sainte-Laguë method; the composition of the Assembly is based on how many votes each party gets.
