Politics of Alaska

The New Democratic Party, coommonly known by its initials the NDA, is a left-leaning social democratic political party in Alaska. The party was founded in 1972 to protest the country's involvement in the Vietnam War protesting against conscription, military intervention, and other concerns including racism, income inequality and calls for political reform. The party was founded by James Altwell after unifying numerous political organizations, movements, trade unions, labor unions and other groups to form the New Democratic Party.

For the first few years of the party's existence, it was relatively fringe in terms of national politics, but started gaining steam in local elections with numerous officials being elected to local and provincial offices and won its first seats in Parliament during the 1994 Alaskan parliamentary elections. The party would maintain a modest presence in parliament, though remains a third party in the modern era and frequently works with the Liberal Democratic Party in government to exert more influence and a say in national politics. In the modern era, the party aligns on the political left being to the left of both the more moderate Liberal Democratic Party and the center-right National Union Party. Its platform focuses on addressing income inequality along with new issues such as support for LGBT rights, immigration, and support for a stronger welfare state and social safety net.

In Parliament, the NDA has a limited presence holding no seats in the upper house National Council and four within the House of Commons. In regards to Alaska's delegation to the American Parliament, the NDA holds one seat, Joseph Cromwell, since the 2015 American Parliament election. In the American Parliament, the NDA is affiliated with the Social Democrats of America and adheres to a platform of American unionism and supports Alaskan membership in the Conference of American States.
