New Hanover, officially the Commonwealth of New Hanover, is a federal state in the eastern region of the Kingdom of Superior. It borders Lake Superior to the north; Uppasala to the northeast; Arrowhead to the northwest; Minnesota to the west; Rochester and New Anjou to the southwest; Lansing to the south; and Lake Michigan to the east and southeast. Geographically, the state has a varied landscape that includes the Northern Highlands, the Central Plain, most of the Western Upland, and a small part of the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands. Grünebucht is the largest city and the state capital. The topography of the state is characterized by lowlands along the coast in the north and east, a grassland plain in the south, and hills in the much of the north and center of New Hanover.
The geography of state was impacted by glaciation during the Ice Age. The area was inhabited by the Algonquian and Siouan nations before the arrival of Europeans. New Hanover was apart of the colonial British North America before becoming apart of the Northwest Territory of the United States in 1787. New Hanover, along of Lansing, were originally the state of Wisconsin within the United States from 1848. New Hanover joined the rest of Wisconsin in forming the Kingdom of Superior and was admitted as one of the first five states of Superior. The state differentiated itself for the strong presence of German culture. German immigrants were the primary settlers of New Hanover and formed a shared cultural identity, which persists to this day. The city and state capital of Grünebucht was one of the first Superian urban centers to industrialized, becoming known for its manufacturing industries.
New Hanover was an important battleground of the Great War. While the state came under the occupation of the United Commonwealth and the Superian Continental Republic, resistance to Continental rule was strongly active, with multiple North Star Resistance cells based in the state. Following the war, New Hanover was rebuilt by the Olsen Revitalization Project and its economy began to be diversified. During the mid-20th century, Grünebucht and Bayside were centers of the urban counter-culture movement, and the former was the site of multiple notable protests during the Superian civil rights movement.
The state is seen as combination of rural and urban, with a mix of forest and farmland in the center and south, while its main cities are located along the coasts of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Its economy is dominated by manufacturing, healthcare, information technology, and agriculture; specifically dairy, cranberries and ginseng. Amaco Dairy, based in New Hanover, is one of the largest producer of dairy products in North America. Tourism is also a major contributor to the state's economy, as the forests of New Hanover receive many visitors, as does Grünebucht. The ports along the Great Lakes are a major center for trade between Superior and the rest of the world, with rivers connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Many railroads connect the ports to other parts of Eastern Superior and other areas further to the west, as well as to the urban areas of Lansing to the south and to the United Commonwealth beyond that. The Superian Armed Forces have several large facilities in the state, including the Royal Military Academy New Hanover and the King George Royal Naval College. New Hanover has the third-highest per capita GDP among Superian states.
New Hanover is known as a center of German culture in Superior and North America. The state forms the central part of the Ostheide, a cultural region consisting of the largest concentration of German-speaking people in both Superior and the Western Hemisphere. New Brandenburg, the second-largest city in New Hanover in terms of population, is the central hub of the Ostheide and is one of the last cities and urban centers in Superior that has maintained a German-speaking plurality. According to the 2019 census, a total of TBD% of New Hanoverians speak German as a first language and an additional TBD% speak the language in every day life rather than English, a large part of that population centered in and around New Brandenburg and rural areas. Since the beginning of the decline in use of the German language in the early 20th century, the state government of New Hanover has taken steps to ensure the language's continued relevance.

Political party strength
New Hanover is considered to be a traditionally left-leaning state, in which both state or regional elections are dominated by the Liberal Democrats and the Farmer-Labor Party or their regional affiliate parties in the case of the New Hanover state parliament. Right-leaning parties have historically been weaker on the state level, with the United Conservatives and the Christian Democrats as more competitive candidates in federal elections. Experts explain this electoral behavior by a more conservative attitude in regards to foreign policy and a dominance of moderate conservatives in the regional affiliates of the United Conservatives and Christian Democrats. State-level politics are largely in control of independent affiliate parties, which run on the ticket of their national affiliations during federal elections. The majority of seats in the state parliament of New Hanover (as of 2023) are occupied by the LDP and FLP affiliates, namely the Ostheidian Progressive-Democratic Party (Ostheidische Fortschrittlich-Demokratische Partei, FDP) and the Social Democratic Labor Party of the Ostheide (Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei der Ostheide, SDAPO) respectively. The opposition is represented by the UCP-affiliate Democratic Center Party of the Ostheide (Demokratische Zentrumspartei der Ostheide, DZPO) and the CDPS-affiliate Christian-Social Electoral Alliance (Christlich-Soziale Wählerverband, CSW). New Hanover is one of the few states in which the Constitution and Unionist Party of Superior has no representation on the state level and only a marginal relevance in nation wide elections. Between 2001 and 2017 the Libertarian Party of Superior was represented with their affiliate the Free-minded Party of the Ostheide (Freisinnige Partei der Ostheide, FPO) with four seats in the state's parliament.
