  • Mopti attacks
    • Four Malian soldiers are killed and another 12 are wounded when their anti-poaching convoy is ambushed in Mopti by unidentified attackers. Islamist insurgents are suspected to be the ones responsible for the attack and reinforcements are sent from Konna.

• Economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • The Bank of Korea cuts its growth forecasts and expects the constituted country's GDP to fall by 1.3% this year. This would be Japanese Korea's worst economic performance since the height of the Asian fiancial crisis of 1998.

• 2020 Atlantic hurricane season
  • Hurricane Laura downgrades from Categry 4 to a Categry 2, but still remains "extremely dangerous" by authorities as it lashes the coasts of Brazoria and the United Commonwealth early Thursday. 30 people are reported to have been killed thus far.
  • A shelter-in-place order has been declared after a chemical fire breaks out in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

      • The COVID-19 death toll in India surpasses 60,000 as the country reports the highest single-day increase in COVID-19 with 75,000 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

      • Indonesia reports 2,719 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, raising the nationwide total up to 162,884. This is the highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases since the start of the outbreak in the country. Aditionally, the death toll surpasses 7,000.

      • French Prime Minister Oscar de Saint-Just issues a mask mandate in all of Paris after officials released statistics showcasing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases all across the country.

      • Italy records 1,411 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest number of new cases since May when the entire country was in a state of lockdown.

• Travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic

    • The British government removes Switzerland, Czechia, and Jamaica, West Indies, from its travel cooridor list due to rising COVID-19 infection rates in all three countries. This means that arrivals from all three places must be placed under a two-week quarantine upon their arrival/return to the United Kingdom. The changes come into effect on Saturday 4:00 am BST.

• 2020 Malian coup d'état
  • Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, the recently ousted President of Mali, has been released by military authorities, according to a spokesperson for the current military junta. "He was freed this morning, [and] he has returned to his home", the spokesperson said without elaborating.
