The Harrison ministry is the current cabinet of the Kingdom of Sierra. It was formed on 14 February 2024 following the election of Cedric Harrison as leader of the Democratic-Republican Party of Sierra which in turn made him the next prime minister. The cabinet itself serves as continuation of the previous government lead by Maggie Chan, having inherited all previous cabinet members and a majority of other ministers as well.
Background
On January 20, 2024, then prime minister Maggie Chan had announced her resignation as prime minister and from politics as whole due to being diagnosed with Stage II colorectal cancer and suffering from occupational burnout. She submitted her formal resignation the same day and would remain as party leader and prime minister until a successor had been chosen. Cedric Harrison, who had served as Minister of Education under the Chan government, announced his candidacy for the position of party leader on January 22 after the announcement of the party leadership election. Throughout his tenure as education minister, Harrison helped implement several new reforms to Sierra's education system and fought back several conservative education proposals and policies on the provincial and federal level as well as being noted for his strong support for Chan.
During the 2024 Democratic-Republican leadership election, Harrison was one of the main frontrunners alongside party chief whip Kimberly Lincoln from San Joaquin. Harrison stood out for his bold progressive vision, support for Kwon, and record in being able to work across the isle with the Royalist Party and maintain the Cornflower coalition despite major ideological differences between both parties and their allies. Harrison would emerge victorious on February 8 come the day of the election where he won 58% of the popular vote and was formally sworn in on February 12 following the conclusion of the 2024 Democratic-Republican National Convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco City. Harrison's win was praised by several outsiders, including the Royalist Party and their allies, due to him being viewed as the best pick to succeed Chan and being viewed as the best one capable of maintaining the cornflower coalition despite internal disputes out of a mutual opposition towards the Social Democrats of Sierra under former prime minister and current Leader of the Opposition Susan Kwon following the 2022 Kingdom of Sierra government crisis.
