Evelyn Rebecca Lyerly is a Sierran orthodontist and politician serving as the MP for Laguna's 7th district (Otay-Mesa), which represents the southeasternmost region of San Diego. She is a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. Lyerly previously served as the Laguna General Assemblywoman for the 18th district from 2009 to 2013. Since December 2022, Lyerly has served as Minister of Culture in the Chan ministry.
In February of 2024, Lyerly ran for the leadership position of the Democratic-Republican Party. She was defeated by Cedric Harrison and secured fourth place.
Early life, education, and career
Lyerly was born in Coronado, Laguna near Naval Base San Diego where her father, James Lyerly, was stationed as a Sierran Royal Navy sailor. Her parents were originally from Plainsfield, San Joaquin. After James Lyerly's assignment was ended and he was honorably discharged, Lyerly's family settled in San Diego. The family was raised Lutheran but attended church infrequently. The eldest of four children, Lyerly graduated from Silver Strand High School and received her B.S. in biology from the University of Sierra, San Diego. She earned her D.D.S. from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.
Beginning in 1998, Lyerly has held a private dentistry practice in San Diego, specializing in orthodontics. She became a member of the Sierran Dental Association and chaired the San Diego Dental Society from 2002 to 2004. She was named "Best Dentist of the Year" by the Sierran Dental Association's Southwestern Division in 2005. Following her entry into politics, Lyerly maintained her dental license and has provided both pro bono and affordable dental care for low-income families during her off-days.
Political career
Laguna General Assembly
In 2009, Lyerly ran for the Democratic-Republican ticket in Laguna's 18th district. The seat was open after incumbent Royalist Ronnie Flores ran for Laguna Senate. She won in the Democratic-Republican primaries and defeated Royalist candidate Mark Wohlenberg in the general election.
Member of Parliament
In 2013, Lyerly was selected for Laguna's 18th district in the K.S. House of Commons by the Laguna Democratic-Republicans. The district, largely considered a safe one for the Democratic-Republicans, mainly encompasses the San Diego neighborhood of Otay-Mesa and adjacent mountain areas to the east. She was first elected MP in the 2013 Sierran federal election with a majority of 4,305 (12.44%).
After winning reelection in the 2022 federal election, Lyerly was appointed as the Minister of Culture by Prime Minister Maggie Chan. As a minister of the Cabinet, Lyerly became a member of Her Royal Majesty's Privy Council.
