Ryan Marcus Kaneko (born December 17, 1960) is a Sierran politician and academic currently serving as a Member of the House of Commons representing Box Springs (Inland Empire's 15th district) since 2008 and has served as Speaker of the House since 2022. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, Kaneko previously served as a member of the Inland Empire Provincial Assembly for the 43rd district between 1998 to 2008 and later as Minister of Education between 2020 and 2022.
A native of the Inland Empire, Kaneko was born in the provincial capital of Riverside and attended the University of Sierra, Riverside after graduating high school. Before entering politics, Kaneko was an academic where he taught British literature. He ran for the provincial assembly in 1998 and succeeded Royalist Glenn Reid after he ran for the House of Commons in the 1998 Sierran federal election. As a provincial assemblyman, he backed Democratic-Republican Governor Phillip Martin and later was a staunch critic of his Royalist successor George Barton. In 2008, Kaneko ran for the House of Commons after being inspired by Steven Hong and personal discontent with national politics under the Royalist governments of Matthew Braggs and Dianna Jeong. He ran for Box Springs, the district that constitutes his home district, to succeed Spender White who later ran for the Senate. Kaneko was successfully elected and took office on March 19.
As a member of parliament, Kaneko has been a supporter of Democratic-Republican policies and has been ranked as one of the most liberal politicians in the country. He voted with Hong 100% of the time during his tenure as prime minister and only 5% and 15% with Daniel McComb and Nemesis Heartwell respectively. He was appointed Minister of Education under Susan Kwon after the 2020 federal election and served under Kwon's Social Democrat-led governments. In September 2022, he resigned from his post following the credible allegations of foreign involvement by the United Commonwealth during the 2021 Sierran federal election with his resignation triggering a government crisis. Following the 2022 Sierran federal election, Kaneko would support the Cornflower coalition government between the Democratic-Republican and Royalist parties along with their respective allies and was elected House Speaker on December 2, defeating Social Democrat predecessor Ian Calderon in a landslide victory.
