List of sovereign states (Altverse II)

This article is part of Altverse II.

The following is a list of sovereign states around the world. with information on their status and recognition of their sovereignty. The list of sovereign states is not universally agreed upon, as there is no binding definition to all members of the community of nations regarding statehood. The list includes entities that have been recognized as having de facto status as sovereign states, and inclusion is not an endorsement of any specific claim to statehood in legal terms.

In customary international law the dominant standard of statehood is the declarative theory of statehood, as codified by the Montevideo Convention of 1933. By this Convention, the state is defined as a person of international law if it "possess[es] the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) a capacity to enter into relations with the other states" so long as it was not "obtained by force whether this consists in the employment of arms, in threatening diplomatic representations, or in any other effective coercive measure". Whether or not diplomatic recognition should be included as a criterion of statehood is currently debated, as the declarative theory of statehood argues that statehood is purely objective and recognition of a state by other states is irrelevant. Conversely, the constitutive theory of statehood defines a state as a person under international law only if it is recognized as sovereign by other states.

The United Commonwealth of America (UCA) controls the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and has not renounced claims over its annexed territories on the mainland. The UCA is recognized by ten states, none of which recognize the UCCS. Additionally, one LN member (Bhutan) has refrained from recognizing either the UCCS or the UCA.

In addition to these relations, the UCA also maintains unofficial relations with 68 LN member states, ten territories, and the European Community via its representative offices and consulates under the One America principle. The Antilles has the 30th-largest diplomatic network in the world with 120 offices.

The territory of the UCA is claimed in whole by the UCCS. The UCA participates in international organizations under a variety of pseudonyms, most commonly "American Antilles" and in the WTO it has full membership under the designation of "Separate Customs Territory of the Antilles".
