Before European discovery, Minnesota was sparsely populated by various indigenous tribes, many of which are considered First Nation tribes in contemporary times. Much of Minnesota was claimed as a part of French Louisiana, though like much of the large French colony Minnesota remained largely unsettled until after the Louisiana Purchase by the United States in 1803. Minnesota was admitted into the United States in 1858. Unlike the Minnesota of Superior, the Minnesota of the United States included the entirety of Arrowhead and what is considered to be northeastern Sioux. While in the United States, Minnesota experienced settlement by American, German, and Scandinavian immigrants, the latter two of which were escaping persecution in the east.
During the War of Contingency, Minnesota, along with the states of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska, were occupied by the Anglo-Sierran coalition, forming the Kingdom of Superior. Minnesota was the epicenter of the Superian Revolution, where armies loyal to the newly-established Superior defeated forces loyal to the newly-formed United Commonwealth of America. Following the war, the state was divided into separate territories, with the populated central area forming a reduced Minnesota. Quickly, Minnesota became the center of political power in Superior, with Saint Anthony serving as the national capital. During the Industrial Revolution, the population of the state tripled as cities arose as national manufacturing hubs.
During the Great War, Minnesota came under the occupation of the United Commonwealth, specifically under the Superian Continental Republic. Saint Anthony was a center of activity for the North Star Resistance, which utilized guerilla warfare to oppose the Continentals. The Liberation of Saint Anthony is considered to be a major turning point in the war, seeing the Liberation of Superior from Continental control. Minnesota was at the forefront of political, societal, and cultural changes in Superior during the Cold War; the state was the birthplace of the Superian counter-culture movement, a stronghold of the progressive politics of the Westing Era, and saw immigration from across the world.
In contemporary times, Minnesota is widely recognized as the economic and political center of the Kingdom of Superior. Minnesota maintains the largest economy in Superior, which is highly diversified with various industrial sectors. Saint Anthony, which houses the Parliament of Superior, the Presidency, and the Monarchy, also acts as the state capital and largest city of Minnesota. The state also includes the headquarters of various religious denominations in Superior, most notably the National Lutheran Church of Superior. A number of international corporations are headquartered in Minnesota, including Kyber Technologies, Target Corporation, Best Buy, and Kennedy Capital. In more recent decades, Minnesota has become more multicultural, primarily caused by a larger migration and immigration from Latin America and the Indian subcontinent; the state maintains the largest population of Indian Superians, primarily of Punjabi and Pakistani descent, and the largest non-Christian population in Superior.
History
The region now known as Minnesota was first inhabited by the Dakota people, having long established themselves in the region by the time Europeans first arrived in North America. The first Europeans to arrive in Minnesota were French fur traders and voyageurs that first arrived in the 17th century, using the Grand Portage to access trading and trapping areas further into Minnesota. Indigenous groups north of Minnesota, specifically the Anishinaabe (also known as the Ojibwe and Chippewa) also migrated to Minnesota and caused tension with the native Dakota people, dislocating the Mdewakanton from their native lands in the Mille Lacs Lake. Minnesota would later be mapped by European explorers Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, Joseph Nicollet, Father Louis Hennepin, Jonathan Carver from Colonial Massachusetts, and American explorer Henry Schoolcraft.
Minnesota was originally under the control of New France, the overseas colonial holdings of the Kingdom of France in the new world until 1762 when it fell under control of the Spanish empire and was organized as part of Spanish Louisiana in New Spain until 1802 when it was given back to France. Eastern areas of Minnesota were lended to the United States following its victory in the American Revolutionary War in accordance with the Second Treaty of Paris, however the rest of Minnesota wouldn't be acquired until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 between the United States and the First French Republic, though the Hudson's Bay Company contested the Red River Valley until it was resaved with the Treaty of 1818 when the 49th Parallel was agreed upon between the U.S. and Canada. At the time of the purchase, Minnesota and the rest of the region was largely uninhabited, sparsely populated by small settlements outside of New Orleans in present-day Louisiana. Due to the vast amount of open land, American settlers began traveling out west to settle these areas and claim the open land in accordance with Westward Expansion.
