Saint Anthony, sometimes referred to it's previous name Minneapolis City is the capital city of the Kingdom of Superior and the administrative capital of the state of Minnesota. Along with that, it is also the capital of the State of Minnesota, an administrative division of Superior. As of 2020, the population of Saint Anthony is estimated to be around 1.1 million people, making it the second-largest city in Superior, following New Hamburg in Lansing. It has one of the largest populations in the Midwestern Anglo-America

Saint Anthony lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River. The city is abundantly rich in water, with 13 lakes, wetlands, the Mississippi River, creeks and waterfalls; many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. Due in part to its high degree of accessibility, the city is often ranked as having one of the best park systems in Anglo-America. Saint Anthony was once the world's flour milling capital and a hub for timber. Along with being the political center of the country, Saint Anthony is also the technological and economic capital of Superior, with many international businesses having their headquarters in the city. The city is also home to multiple Fortune 500 companies. Saint Anthony is the fifth-largest hub for major corporate headquarters in Anglo-America.

Before American settlement, the lands that make up present day Saint Anthony were home to the Dakota tribe. They later were pushed out by settlers. Saint Anthony was founded in 1819 by American settlers colonizing the recently purchased Louisiana Territory. It was founded as the city of Minneapolis. After the admittance of Minnesota as the 32nd state in 1858, Saint Anthony was chosen as the new state's capital. During its time under the United States, Saint Anthony acted as an urban outpost for explorers and other colonists, and became the home to a large number of Swedish migrants. After the signing of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence of Superior, Saint Anthony was chosen as the new country's provisional capital, eventually becoming its national capital after the war. During the Industrial Age and the Crimson Spring, Saint Anthony's population greatly increased, with large numbers of refugees from the United Commonwealth and Quebec entering the city. During the Great War, Saint Anthony was occupied by the Continental Army of the United Commonwealth during invasion of Superior and was placed under the control of the collaborationist Superian Continental Republic until the end of the war in 1938.

As the national capital, Saint Anthony is home to all three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial), the Monarchy of Superior, and many other government offices, departments, and agencies. The legislative branch is located in the Superian Parliament Building, the judicial branch is located in the High Court of Superior, and the executive branch is located in Executive Mansion, though unofficially it is located in Heartland Palace, which is home to the Monarch of Superior and their family. The city is considered the economic capital of Superior, with many large Superian-based international businesses, like Best Buy and Target, and is home to one of the largest commericial centers in North America, the Mall of the Heartlands. The city is also the home of many consulates, including the Sierran and Continental embassies.

In May 2020, an African Superian man, George Floyd, was murdered by Derek Chauvin, a white officer of the Saint Anthony Police Department, occured in the city in broad daylight. The event went viral and sparked a series of anti-racist protests worldwide and put Saint Anthony and racism in the national and international spotlight.

Etymology

The city of Saint Anthony is named after the Catholic priest and saint Anthony of Padua. Born in Lisbon, Portugal to a wealthy family, Anthony became a friar for the Franciscan Order. Known for his powerful preaching, Anthony travelled across Europe and eventually pass away in 1231 in Italy. Anthony was made a saint by Pope Gregory IX for his undying love for the poor and sick and his expert knowledge of scripture. Eventually, Saint Anthony became the patron saint of lost souls and people, which befitted the city of Minneapolis, which was largely populated by migrants and refugees. Saint Anthony became the official name of the city in 1868, shortly after the independence of Superior from the United States.

Saint Anthony's previous name, Minneapolis, originated from the combination of the Dakota word for waterfall (Mníȟaȟa) and Indianapolis, which formed the word "Minnehapolis". Eventually, the "h" was phased out to form the word "Minneapolis", which meant the "City of the Falls". The name was created by Charles Hoag, who was the first schoolmaster of the city. Although Minneapolis was the city's official name until 1868, a majority of the residents of the city had their own name for it, with some examples including: "Addesville", "Minnestadt", and "Nordstaren". After the name change, Saint Anthony is still be referred to as Minneapolis by some. The official nicknames of the city are: "The River City", "The North Star of the Mississippi", and "Federal Center", with the latter referring to its role as the capital city of the nation.

History

Dakota natives, settlement, and pre-Superian history

Before European discovery, the region of Minnesota, and to an extension Saint Anthony, was largely populated by the Dakota Sioux tribe, who acted as the region's sole residents. In 1680, French explorers arrived in the region and begin surveying the area, which was claimed under French Louisiana. Gradually, European and eventually American settlers arrived in the region and begin colonization, pushing out native Dakota Sioux. In the early 19th century, the United States acquired the lands that made up Saint Anthony through the Louisiana Purchase. The first settlement established in the region was Fort Snelling, which was a United States Army outpost established in 1819. The fort attracted many traders, trappers, and settlers, eventually establishing the multiple towns that eventually formed Saint Anthony. In 1856, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature, the Minnesota Territory's governing legislative body, designated the fort and its surrounding settlements as apart of the newly-created town of Minneapolis, the precursor to Saint Anthony. Shortly before statehood in 1858, Minneapolis absorbed the settlement of Saint Paul, making the town the largest in the territory. In 1858, shortly after the admittance of Minnesota as the 32nd state of the United States, Minneapolis was designated as the new state's capital. Minneapolis quickly became the urban center of the new state, however it was not granted the identification of a city until after Superian independence in 1867.

Minneapolis became a strategic and geographically part of the expansion and exploration of the American West. Many potential settlers of the "Frontier" used Minneapolis and its surrounding towns as a staging point before heading out west, with some spending their last known moments in the city. Many well known frontiersmen, including Daniel Westwards, Doc Newell, and Stephen Meek, journeyed to the city before heading into the frontier. Many of these men became Anglo-American, and later Superian folk heroes, and are considered important figures in Saint Anthony's early development. Saint Anthony's early culture was largely American, with its reputation of being a culturally diverse city being created once apart of Superior. In 1866, Saint Anthony was selected by General William Tecumseh Sherman to be his administrative capital following his appointment as the military governor of the Superian territories.

In 1932 following the outbreak of the Great War, the United Commonwealth launched an invasion of Superior following its invasion of Brazoria beforehand. The Continental Army made major gains and overwhelmed the Superian Royal Army units on the border. By May, Saint Anthony had been captured along with the states of Minnesota and the states of Eastern Superior. Throughout the entirety of the war in North America, Saint Anthony was under the control of the collaborationist Superian Continental Republic, a pro-Continental puppet state lead by Jon Hansen and the Landonist Labor Party of Superior, which governed territories in Superior under military occupation.
