The 1st Division is a Sierran Royal Army infantry division with a very long history. One of the earliest units of the Royal Army, it was raised during the War of Contingency in 1866, and can directly trace its history to the earliest militias of the California Republic. The division served in the War of Contingency, the Sierran Civil War, the Spanish–American War, Great War, Great War, and the Syrian War. For decades the 1st Division was subordinated to the Sierran I Corps. Since the restructuring of the Army in the early 2000s, the 1st Division is one of the primary combat units of the Royal Army. It is currently stationed in the Greater Porciúncula Area, which is traditionally where the division's recruits came from.
