The Kingdom of Sierra American Command (KSAMERICOM) is the regional unified combatant command of the Sierran Crown Armed Forces that covers North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean. It is tasked with defending the homeland of the Kingdom of Sierra, where it provides support for and coordinates with the civilian Government of Sierra, and would be the primary defender of the country in the event of a foreign invasion. American Command also defends the interests of Sierra and promotes security cooperation in the rest of the Western Hemisphere, including with the governments of Superior, Astoria, Manitoba, Brazoria, Alaska, Central America, the Caribbean states, Brazil, and others. The protection of the Nicaragua Canal is also part of its responsibilities.
American Command was established by Prime Minister Matthew Braggs in March 2004, in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, as part of a reorganization of the Sierran Armed Forces into new geographic and functional unified combatant commands to coordinate combined operations across different branches. Since the increase in tensions with the United Commonwealth and the United People's Committees in the late 2010s, the number of active combat forces under the command of AMERICOM have been increased. It has the second-largest area of responsibility of the Sierran unified commands, including the entirety of the Western Hemisphere.
Mission
The stated objectives of the Command are as follows:
- Maintaining the readiness and capabilities of the Sierran Crown Armed Forces on the territory of the Kingdom of Sierra or its allies in the Western Hemisphere.
- Providing support to civilian authorities in Sierra or its allies in the region in the event of emergencies and humanitarian disasters.
- Contingency planning for defending the homeland in the event of a foreign invasion or carrying out military interventions in the Western Hemisphere.
History
Historically, there were several commands in the Western Hemisphere tasked with operations, founded in 1939 in the aftermath of Great War I. The lessons learned by the Joint Chiefs of the Defense Staff in that conflict led to a reorganization of the armed forces to create joint forces commands that would better coordinate operations in another potential war with the United Commonwealth. The predecessors of AMERICOM's modern area of responsibility included the Sierran Alaskan Command, the Pacific Command (mainly covering the Sierran Pacific territories), the Caribbean Command (covering the Nicaragua Canal and a few Sierran territories), and the Home Command (covering federal Sierra and Deseret). In 1968, the Home Command was replaced by the Joint Forces Command, which had responsibility for "maintaining the readiness of the Sierran Crown Armed Forces in the Kingdom of Sierra proper, Hawaii, Guam, and other Sierran Pacific islands to defend the homeland and support out-of-area operations when needed." Alaska had become independent, Caribbean Command had been expanded to include operations in South America, and Pacific Command oversaw Sierran garrisons in allied countries of the Western Pacific, such as Japan, South Vietnam, and Tondo.
The Vietnam War and the Colombia War dominated the military's attention in the 1960s and 1970s, which were followed by the Central American crisis and the Caribbean Wars of the 1980s. By the early 1990s, the Joint Forces Command was seen as redundant as military operations were winding down, and it was formally dissolved in 1995, with its essential duties being taken over by the Joint Chiefs. In 2004, following the September 11 attacks, American Command was established to oversee military operations and the maintenance of military assets in the Western Hemisphere, taking on the role largely given to the previous Joint Forces Command.
