Pacífico Sur, officially the State of Pacífico Sur (Spanish: Estado de Pacífico Sur) is a state of Bajaría, located on the southern half of the Baja California peninsula. It, alongside Pacífico Norte, South Sonora, Cancún, and Mérida form Bajaría, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Sierra. Bajaría was formerly known as El Norte, a disputed region between Sierra and Mexico. Its capital is La Paz while its largest city is Cabo San Lucas, which sits at the southernmost tip of the state and peninsula. Other significant settlements include Loreto, San José del Cabo, and Ciudad Constitución, and Santa Rosalía. The official state languages are Spanish and English, with the former the most widely spoken. It is the 6th largest PSA in the Kingdom by total area and the 20th most populous overall.
Pacífico Norte and Pacífico Sur were originally part of the Spanish province of Las Californias, and later Baja California under Mexico. Sparsely inhabited at the time, the Baja California peninsula and Sonora were seized by insurrectionist Californians who revolted against Mexican rule during the Mexican-American War. Following the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga, Mexican control over Alta California was informally rescinded. Sensing Mexico's near defeat, Californian and American troops invaded the Baja California peninsula, forced the Mexican authorities to capitulate, and occupied it until the war's end. Through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico officially recognized California's independence and also recognized California's sovereign control over the Baja California peninsula and the Sonoran region in 1848. The Baja California Peninsula and Sonora Land Act formalized the division between Federal Sierra and the Baja California peninsula. In 1858, California reformed into Sierra, and the new constitution officially listed Pacífico Sur as one of the Kingdom's territories. Human development and economic opportunity was significantly limited throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, due to the region's remoteness and desert climate. After the Great War, the region saw considerable investment in transportation, public utilities, and housing. Both the Sierran Crown Armed Forces and the Royal Aeronautics and Aerospace Administration became major employers in the territory with the establishment of Naval Base Magdalena and the Ortega Spaceport respectively. The latter became the Kingdom of Sierra's primary space launch base. Beach tourism and gambling also became important drivers in the territory's economy.
In 2021, voters across El Norte including Pacífico Norte approved measures to confederate the El Norte territories as one country (Bajaría), with the intention of joining the Kingdom as incorporated territory. On March 6, 2021, Pacífico Sur became a Bajarian state and the 43rd PSA of the Kingdom.
Pacífico Sur shares its only land border with Pacífico Norte. It shares maritime borders with South Sonora and Mexico across the the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). To the south and to the west, it borders the Pacific Ocean.
Etymology
Pacífico Sur is the Spanish form of "South Pacific". Historically, Pacífico Sur was known as the southern part of Baja California (Lower California) when it was a territory of Mexico. "California" was used to refer to both the peninsula and the land north of what is now the Kingdom of Sierra. Californian lands north of Baja California was referred to as Alta California (Upper California) to differentiate the Californias. Pacífico Norte retained the name "Baja California" even after its land was transferred to the Californians through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It was finally renamed to its current name under the new Kingdom and constitution which officially partitioned the territory into two halves, with Pacífico Sur as the new nominal designation of the southern half of the peninsula as an indication of the Kingdom's departure from its association as California. Although politically, Pacífico Sur and its sister territory, Pacífico Norte were renamed, geographically, the peninsula the two are located on continue to be referred to as the "Baja California peninsula" as opposed to the "Pacífico Peninsula" by both official sources and by the public.

Government and politics
Pacífico Sur is a state of Bajaría, which is classified as a PSA under Kingdom law. It is headed by the Lord Superintendent of Pacífico Sur, who is the formal viceregal representative of the Queen. The Lord Superintendent is the territory's head of state, although their role and function is limited to largely ceremonial ones. They are appointed by the Queen and serve at Her Royal Majesty's pleasure. The head of government is the Governor, who is elected by their own peers from the Parliament of Pacífico Sur based on confidence and supply.
