The 2022 Alaskan presidential election was the nineteenth quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Incumbent National Union President Nicolas McCarty defeated Liberal Democratic Rylie Parks, a member of the House of Commons, and New Democratic Joseph Crownwell, a member of the American Parliament. McCarty was sworn in to his second term in office on November 18, 2022.
McCarty easily secured re-nomination in the National Union primaries, soundly defeating archconservative opponent Daniela West. In the Liberal Democratic presidential primaries, progressive member of parliament Rylie Parks narrowly defeated moderate National Council Michael Goldberg from Yukon and fellow progressive President of the Southwest Alaska Regional Council Michael Young. Parks is the first woman and person of indigenous background to be nominated by a major party. As its only candidate, member of the American Parliament Joseph Crownwell was nominated unanimously by the New Democratic Alliance.
During the campaign, McCarty touted his role in post-COVID-19 recovery in Alaska, and his steadfast support for the Antilles and the Conference of American States amid the Caribbean crisis. He heavily campaigned on his role in stopping the Valentine Plot, an attempt by North Vietnamese arms smugglers to smuggle weapons to terrorist organizations in the Kingdom of Sierra and Astoria. McCarty also campaigned on his support for multi-partisanship and his liberal conservative policies. Parks and Crownwell's campaigns were relatively similar, with both candidates attack McCarty for his response to the COVID-19 pandemic and his support of the Alaskan oil and whaling industries. In her campaign, Parks pledged to shift the Alaskan economy away from natural gas and to support indigenous tribes.
With 54.6% of the vote, McCarty soundly defeated Parks and Crownwell, winning a second term in office with the largest percentage in recent Alaskan history. With 42.2% and 2.3% respectively, Parks and Crownwell both had the poorest showing in their party's recent history. McCarty's re-election coincided with the National Union Party retaining their majorities in both houses of Parliament of Alaska. McCarty was sworn in to his second term in office on November 18, 2022 in an inauguration ceremony held at the Alaskan Parliament Building.
Background
Caribbean conflict
On December 12, 2021, the Amazonas incident occured when the Amazonas F, a corvette of the Imperial Brazilian Navy, was attacked and sunk by a Continental Navy cruiser CCS Evansville in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the United People's Committees. While the Continental and Andean governments claimed that the Amazonas was in the maritime borders of the Andes, the Brazilian government claimed that the ship was in international waters and that the attack was illegal and unjust, a stance that the Alaskan government took with President McCarty supporting and imposing economic sanctions against both the Andes and the United Commonwealth in response to the attack.
